Aids post knee replacement

I'm due a total knee replacement next month.

I already have an easy reach grabber, a leg raiser and a raised toilet seat from when I had a new hip last year.

Are there other things that people have found helpful?

Thanks 😊 x

Ice packs and a friend has just bought some Koolpak instant ice packs from Amazon to take with her when she goes away. You just twist them and they freeze instantly .

Another friend who had two new knees found nordic walking poles really helpful both before and after he got his new knee. They take the weight off your knees and hips and give you extra stability. Ideally you would want a few lessons on the correct technique nordicwalking.co.uk

Thank you Fruitandnutcase. I already use trekking pole/s. They were my friends when I was a fell walker (I live in Cumbria) and are still my friends for general getting around.

I'll have a look into Nordic Walking technique...thanks.

And stock up on ice packs.

He managed for about a week after my new hip. Then he disappeared into his shed and, by 11.30 am, I decided I would have to get myself downstairs and make my own porridge, on 2 crutches.Anyhow, he is willing, just more than a little absent minded!

you are fortunate to have what you already have. I didn’t have any of those aids and managed so good luck

Some I inherited from my late in-laws, some I bought prior to the new hip (having asked the same question)My late mum had MS so I already had knowledge of the value of things like easy reaches, etc.

After my new hip I eventually learned how to use a sox-on...it took a while and then became a new best friend

I had a new knee 4 months ago and used cool packs all the time, it’s so soothing. I also set up a box on the table next to the chair I sit in most with things like painkillers, phone, remote control for TV, pen, magazine etc so that I had everything to hand.

That's really good advice Joodee. Thank you x

Bath seat or a shower stool, depending on which you have. I found a bed table with legs very useful for the sofa so I could read etc without touching my knee.

Thank you...I'd thought about the shower, and the bed table sounds really useful...thanks xxx

Ice, ice and more ice! A friend lent me an aircast knee cryo cuff (available from Amazon and others) after my tkr last year. There are gravity fed and motorised versions. They allow even pressure of the cooled water around the knee. I found it very useful. Hint, rather than filling reservoir with ice it will take 2-3 small. bottles of frozen water which can be refrozen and re used. Hope all goes well.

I ordered some DMSO gel from Amazon that I used for pain around the scar site. Not ON the scar itself, but the surrounding area of the knee replacement. I think it helped with residual pain around the knee site. Found it handy after physical therapy too.
