Carpel tunnel syndrome : Hi hope everyone is enjoying... - NRAS
Carpel tunnel syndrome
My understanding is that CTS is triggered by something causing the carpal tunnel space in the wrist to narrow, putting pressure on the median nerve. So inflammation in the wrist could be a cause and that's why it's relatively common in inflammatory arthritis.
My GP wanted me to have surgery on both wrists even though a steroid injection in one wrist had given instant relief (temporarily). I had already been referred to rheumatology & they were sure that the CTS would go as soon as my RA was under controlThe decider was an ultra sound on both wrists, almost 18 months down the line! I was by this time on Prednisolone to allow me some relief from the pain - I had to stop taking it prior to US as it masks the inflammation. I was already on methotrexate & hydroxy so the decision was taken for a biologic. I was started on Imraldi early 2020 & haven't looked back. I also wear splints on both hands at night & will continue to do so.
I felt I couldn't go on much longer. Please ask for an US scan. The longer the CTS goes on the more risk for permanent damage - my left hand has been damaged & is very weak with some bent fingers. Good luck
Worst pain ever, I sympathise with you, but as soon as Meds started working my carpel tunnel disappeared and have had no problems since, now 4yrs on.
Mine all resolved for 3 plus year on tocilizumab but 3 months ago .rhematoid kicked off clinic want a us before they'll change toc looking for innflamtion bloods are normal but this carple came on this week gp put me on coxib 6 weeks ago its was slowly increased to max dose and I thought 2 weeks ago things were finally settling so stopped the coxib on Monday to see if this drug was actually doing its job slowly all the stiffness as returned so stated coxib again and now carpel i joined in just to add to the misery of it all t's going jn my left hand as well as my right can't cope every task is a nightmare . Hate this disease.
CTS was one of my first sign of ra the pain was very bad and had to beg gp to give me steroid injection despite him saying he hadn’t given them for quite sometime. Eventually I had an operation on both wrists by nurse practitioner at my local hospital, thankfully I have not had that level of pain in my wrists since. Like a lot of people have said on this forum ra just keeps on giving.
It's a devil isn't it especially when it flares up had a steriod injection 3 months ago didn't help in anyway ive got worst infact so I'm at the mercy of a US to see if i have innflamation my bloods are all normal doesn't fit into the criteria for a change of biological drugs so its a waiting game for me. I have appointment with OT also everything is so long winded nightmare .
