Hello,

Has anyone trued Plasma injections (PRP)? Did they work and are they available on the NHS in the UK?

Many thanks!

hi

I’d love to hear as well. So far I’ve been put off by the idea of having no local anaesthetic during the process or pain relief afterwards

But I’d love to hear any reports as well - am bone on bone in my left knee.

I didn’t think they were funded by the NHS as NICE didn’t recommend their cost effectiveness but I dint know for sure. Would be wonderful if they could restore some cartilage. Not sure if they work better on less severe osteo cases. My knees are both bone on bone so don’t know if I’d be too far gone for. I shall have to read up more. My French friend’s hubby who is in Paris has had hyaluronic acid injections in his knee some years ago and it helped him a lot. I am sure it wasn’t a combo of PRP and HA though. I’d be interested in general to learn more. My rheumy said re the HA when I asked that the steroid shots worked so well so she’d not change anything.

Hi fluffmonkey I had PRP injection some months ago , at local hospital as part of a patient initiate programme as I understand it its not offered on the NHS as its not proven to work for all pain especially knee pain but times are changing and it might be worth asking. For me it worked for a few months and some say it has not worked at all. It seems very hit & miss in the case of knee and is not available as on going treatment. It also requires an admission type process as it is a very precise practice that we do not have trained staff of any amount in the NHS. Maybe in the near future things might change. You can have it done privately at a price however. It sounds like you need an operation not just pain relief Best wishes take care

Hi I’ve also been looking into this, though privately… from what I can gather in the research I’ve done. It is used by sports, athletes etc, especially top players & the results are usually good for them. I did ask on the joint conversation webinar last month with Rheumatologist & he wasn’t dismissive. He did reiterate what I just said re sports people, he was concerned that people could be buying into something that may not work. But he did say he has had patients who had had it & it has had mixed results, for some it work & for some it doesn’t.. I’m not put off to book the consultation & ultrasound to see if I’m a good candidate or not. I didn’t think it was too costly. Not sure if this is any help!! 🦿
