Hi everyone

Has anyone with Palindromic Arthritis submitted a claim fro Attendance Allowance?

I am in two minds as I need help when PA strikes at various joints and then living a normal life

until it returns again

Any thoughts welcome

It seems very much to depend on who does the assessment.I applied for an aunt in her 90’s who lived alone & had not left her house for years……she had been cared for by various family members. Her initial assessment was done buy a young social worker & she was refused,….one reason being that she “could get up & make herself a cup of tea & she had a meal delivered daily”.

I appealed that decision & a second assessment was arranged with a retired GP….I was at that assessment & he explained that one has to be unable to care for onself 24/7 to receive AA, & that application was approved. Sadly my aunt died before it came through. I don’t know if it can be awarded for the periods of incapacity you experience.Maybe there is some other Benefit you could apply for?

It may be worth contacting Age UK to see if they could advise. They would help you fill in the form if you are eligible. Good luck.

Hi Paul

Just about to reply to your other Q above about PA . I have it.

With regards to your claim, I'd get specialist help as certainly with regards to my illness, PA is unpredictable and you can be unable to move one day and fine three days later. I'm not sure how you can present this.

There are a few new posts about PIP on here with some good resources for professional input - I'd get some help before you fill in the forms.

Best wishes

Unfortunately you can't apply for PIP if you over state pension age . Hopefully that's not the case here

That's a really difficult one with PA as it can be there one day and gone the next. You have nothing to lose by applying of course but it does say in the eligibility criteria that you must have needed help for at least six months. Good luck whatever you decide.

As with any claim it will be dependent on the care you need. It isn’t about the condition,it self. I have several conditions and don’t claim. I did for my mum she is 81, in heart failure, has a carer going in twice a day and needs a lot of help. She only got daily until we reapplied. Another experience, I know a couple from the same household that both get full allowance ( not sure how that works!)They don’t require any help.( they look after each other).
