It's widely used to treat indigestion and heartburn, and acid reflux. It's also taken to prevent and treat stomach ulcers. Omeprazole is a type of medicine called a proton pump inhibitor (PPI). Proton pumps are enzymes in the lining of your stomach that help it make acid to digest food, joke that helps.
out of the meds your on, the only one that potentially interacts with Omeprazole is MTX. Omeprazole can reduce the clearance of MTX from the body, but that is only a concern when you are on high doses, like when it’s used for chemotherapy at doses a hundred times higher than rheumatology doses.
It’s used to reduce the chance of developing stomach ulcers from the steroids. I’ve been on a PPI for years along with my MTX and prednisolone, which I’m on for life. I really wouldn’t worry about it.
I'm on MTX to control my RD when in hospital for THR blood was found in my vomit and they put me on Omeprazole. When I discussed it with the nurses even though I'm not a heavy user of paracetamol , co-codamol I was taking enough to irritate my stomach.
So take mine in the morning, one day I forgot took it later it later in the day & suffered with indigestion that night. Also before being prescribed had a couple of vomiting bouts.
The main thing is I've not noticed any change in the MTX controlling my RD. It's a balancing act with our health and the meds we need. 😊
You'll likely need omeprazole with prednisolone because they aren’t usually enteric coated. One of the reasons is because it's thought enteric coated alters absorption & the risk of peptic ulcers is no different to non coated, among others. There's cost difference as well of course. Funnily enough I was only reading about this yesterday because having been on pred a long while I was wondering whether I should have been prescribed enteric coated all this time even though I take twice daily omeprazole.
As well as pred & omeprazole I'm on lots of other meds too, including MTX, none of which have interacted so it's unlikely you'll have any problem. Should you then it's back to the GP I’m afraid.
I asked my GP to prescribe me the coated Prednisone, she didn’t want to because of the expense, we had a bit of a stand off, and in the end she relented. I had awful indigestion with the uncoated, I have GERD and a hiatus hernia - I was definitely better with the coated.
I was taken off omeprazole when I started methotrexate due to possible reactions but think I will contact rheumatology/GP again after reading your replies as my hiatus hernia is playing up. Secondly now I know who uses my preferred pseudonym!!!!
I’ve been on PPI’s for many years now due to my stomach producing excess acid. I’m sure we are all different, but prednisone gave me terrible indigestion, so I had to up my PPI dose, but then had to significantly lower it again to 15mg per day when prescribed Methotrexate as my liver function bloods shot up into the 100’s.
But it’s normal for PPI’s to be prescribed with Prednisone, especially if you’re on it for a long time.
Hi lindyloo2018, I take both Prednisolone and Omeprazole together (along with a few other medications). The Omprezole is given to protect your stomach from the harsh drugs. I hope all works out for you x
