Has anyone had a steroid intra articulation injection in their elbow joint . I have suffered with severe RA for a number of years and at the moment I’m on Methotrexate ,as I can’t tolerate some of the other meds
But elbow is very painful and really swollen and the consultant has suggest a steroid injection .
Steroid in tablet form hasn’t touched it

i’ve not had steroids in my elbow, but have in other joints and am due to have one in my shoukder in two weeks. They have always worked very well for me,
I am sorry you are suffering so much with your elbow.
Like yourself I have a particularly troublesome elbow joint which has stubbornly refused to respond to Methotrexate and more recently several Biologics.
Last October my Rheumatologist injected the joint with steroid … Although it did not totally get rid of the pain and swelling, it did definitely relieve both, and also gave me a greater range of movement. In my case the benefits lasted 3-4 months before wearing off.
My right elbow is quite deformed and can be painful. I have had it injected twice. Once on each side. Although less painful, the didn't help the numb little finger
I have had steroid injections in every joint over the years, some several times. I had injection in both elbows at the same time, many years ago now and have not needed one since. I hope yours work as well as mine did.
I had 2 steroid injections in my left elbow at my very first appointment, it was slightly uncomfortable but that was all, but, afterwards I was in agony for 48 hours, after this it was brilliant, but I was terrified of ever having another injection in my elbow again when I needed it around 6 months later, so it was given using ultrasound & I had no pain at all this time, this was in 2020 & so far haven't needed another one, still get niggles & occasionally have trouble with range of movement causing a little bit of pain but think the meds help keep it under control.
Hope I have frightened you I just wanted to let you know the 2 different experiences I had x
Hello, Sorry to read you are struggling. Whilst not in my elbow, I've had many steroid injections in my knuckles and shoulder joint. With the shoulder one, I went from not being able to lift my arm at all for severe pain, to moving it above my head in about 12 hours..they worked well for me. Good luck, I hope you get some relief soon.
This was one of the first things I had done not long after I was diagnosed 20+ years ago.
When I was younger I fell and smashed my elbow joint, lots of tiny fractures. After my diagnosis this started giving me a lot of pain and I was unable to straighten my arm completely, it's weird how painful that is. So my consultant offered me an injection there and then. He warned me it would hurt, but I was in so much pain already I figured how much worse can it be?
Well I will say it was one of the most painful things I have ever had done but I don't regret it for one minute. It's one of the only joints I have never had trouble with since, so while it hurt, it was completely worth it without doubt.
