I’d ring your dentist and ask them, we can’t tell you if it’s safe. Your dentist will have come across this before 😊

I've been on pred for years, currently around 10mg and have recently had a root canal, waiting on the crown. No issues.

I’m steroid dependent and had a lot of dental work done at Birmingham Dental Hospital in 2018. The advice given for me was to double my steroids on operation day - I had a lump removed from my tongue. I should think you’d be alright to take them but to be safe I’d ring the dentist and ask.

Let your dentist know. They may want to cover your dental work with an antibiotic course if your immunity is suppressed by steroids. And your healing may take a bit longer.

many thanks. I will ask, expecting to have a 120mg steroid depo medrone shot in the bottom, but would a 6 week lower dose tablet prednisalone be less risky ?

Ask your dentist…….they are the experts, they deal with patients on all sorts of drugs and will reassure you as to what is the best for you. We can’t tell you about prednisolone dosage as everyone is different and it has got to be up to the health professionals who know your history and disease progression. Good luck!

thank you, I asked the dentist, it seems they totally ignore the presence of steroids.

claiming they have not had any problems with patients on steroids and their dentistry work. anyway teeth now have temp fillings waiting for the crowns.caps in 2 weeks now.

You’re extremely unlikely to come off steroids for dental work especially if you’ve been on the oral ones for any length of time as your body stops making them and so relies on the dosage you take. Indeed, sometimes you are prescribed extra to cover any sugical procedure. Please don’t worry about it, the dentist will know what he/she is talking about. All the best for the dental work.

Hi

many thanks, luckily I am not usually on steroids, just one single systemic in the butt to do within the next week or so. my RA is playing up as I had 3 ops in the last 8 months and was on and off my mtx so much I think my RA is a bit out of control at the moment. have been back on the mtx for 4 weeks now but knees are complaining as are the wrists. I was hoping 1 dose of steroids would take the whole lot down. I am due another op in feb/march for a torn tendon.

I've had a lot of dental work whilst being on oral prednisolone and DMARDs.I had no problems with root canal treatment, although a tooth extraction wound took a little longer to heal than normal, but it wasn't infected.

My dentist called the dental hospital who advised me to double my prednisolone dose the day of the extraction.

Otherwise all well.
