Has anyone had problems with esophageal paralysis/dysmotility, esophageal hernia and hiatal hernia??

I have had an on going struggle for several years since my esophagus stopping performing peristalsis when I swallow, and well looking into the cause of that found out that I have a 6cm hiatal hernia, and I can not remember the size of the esophageal hernia, which at first the plan was to leave them alone because they were movable and not stuck. Then on the morning of Wednesday, 15 2022 I was woken up by stabbing pains to my left upper quadrant, and trouble getting a full or deep breath. The pain continues to be stabbing pains whenever I move or breathe. I saw the duty doctor on Thursday, 16 2022, as my doctor was away and they after a quick exam were pretty much convinced that it was my hidal hernia letting my stomach go up through my diaphragm into my chest, causing the pain and the trouble breathing. I was sent for x-rays to confirm but the doctor will not get the results until Monday. Since they were pretty sure they knew what was going on they explained that it was most likely that I would need to go for surgery but that it is not immediate emergency surgery so it could take a while before I get in. I have tried taking my emtec which is for my other pain, it takes a little bit of the edge off but it does not do much else for the pain. I have also been unable to sleep since it started and woke me up, I can not get into a even sort of comfortable position to sleep and the only slightly comfortable position is not one I can sleep in. I even tried taking a sleeping pill just to try and force sleep but it is not working. Someone if anybody else has dealt with this kind of problem before and would be able to give me tips on how to manage the pain?? comfortable positions?? sleep tips??

Also I am scared to try solid foods for a risk of choking since I am already at risk before this. Of anyone had this were you able to eat solid foods like you normally would or did you have to change how or what you ate??

I hope everyone is having their own personal best kind of day.

Yes unfortunately I was advised to have surgery but it’s a big op with a long and difficult recovery . I’m not up for that on top of everything else at the moment but I know my day will come . I raise my bed and have 2 high pillows take peptic after meals / before bed and esomprazole . Pains killers don’t work and can make it worse. I have a bland diet no caffeine unfortunately alcohol makes it worse. Keep a diary to see what makes things worse. Good luck .

It was explained as minor surgery to me. I do take Dexilant twice a day. I have seen different people on here in other posts say about a bland diet but what does that look like?? Thank you for the tips.

Bland diet is non Acidic . You can Google it but it’s basically no tomatoes/ spices/ chocolate/ cabbage/ sprouts / citric fruits . No acid food at all . Google GERD diet it is boring.

I will have to look into it, the doctor said to avoid spicy, citrus and greasy foods as they could inflame my stomach. Some of those things would be not to bad to avoid as I do not like them really, but no chocolate seems like torture as it is my go to comfort treat when my taste buds are cooperating. Thank you again for your advice.

I know everything we love is slowly taken from us . It doesn’t help when our meds are part of the problem

Sadly yes, and meds really suck at times.

Interesting. I had an endoscopy on Thursday as I have been having problems with gastritis related symptoms for the past 4 months. Turns out I have a 3cm hiatus hernia and polyps. Now I know what to expect in the future 😡. Good luck, I hope you get sorted soon. I am fed up with it already. I have already gone through 4 bottles of gaviscon/peptac liquid. What did help was my GP upping my esomeprazole to 2 a day for several weeks 👍

Hi I had a HRCT scan due to sudden worsening of shortness of breath. I have fused ribs and no chest expansion, so had blamed this. The scan showed what initially was thought to be pulmonary fibrosis and a hiatus hernia. It eventually turned out that the lung damage was due to aspirating stomach acid, which was leaking into my oesophagus due to the hernia. I’ve been told I may need surgery, at the moment respiratory consultant has put me on a stronger ppi, which seems to be helping. I also have to take gaviscon advance at night, she stressed it had to be the advance one that I use. On top of this I have an electric bed, so sleep on a slight incline, which makes a huge difference. I recently stayed at my daughters, where my symptoms flared again from lying flat. I’m still monitored closely as she tells me it could still develop into pulmonary fibrosis. I’m hopeful that I can avoid surgery if things continue as they are now.

I have a hiatus hernia which caused me loads of problems for quite a while but when they found that they also found that I had gallstones which didn’t help my symptoms. Greasy food and things like cream and cheese etc are a no no. My dad had a massive hiatus for over 40 years and many times the pain was so bad he thought he was having a heart attack he stopped eating fatty foods and it helped somewhat he slept virtually upright too and found a v shaped pillow helpful. He was told it was a very big operation too and they never did it so he suffered for many years. If the op is offered I would take it but obviously that would depend on the medics and whether they think you’re fit enough for it. I hope you find a solution because pain from that is excruciating.
