Thanks for the warning. Cue the usual stockpiling when a shortage is announced🙄🤗

I started sneezing last week!

I take antihistamines everyday from just before the pollen season starts, on the advice of my asthma nurse.Actually , thinking about it, I haven't seen any in the shop I usually get them from for ages.

My HF seemed to go away for years…but it popped up again last year ….before I moved house….or I would have thought the change of location was to blame. I developed late onset asthma in my 50’s when I was living in a very high traffic area in London……but it disappeared like magic when I moved to the country….so now I do believe it is true that location can cause asthma…… at any age.

I use the generic Loratadine….Piriton doesn’t work for me unless I want to go to sleep…then it’s a knockout!

Same as me…piriton knocks me out so Loretadine for me too.

I use Loratadine too. I live in Herts - Lea Valley area and it's bad there too apparently.

I haven’t tried to buy any yet….but so far not needed urgently!Good luck in finding some…as you need it because you still have Asthma maybe your nurse can give you a prescription…I would imagine they must keep some back for those who merit a prescription- even for OTC drugs.

Just got some in Tesco - 2 packs of 30. Still a lot left, so maybe people don't know yet . Thanks for the heads up as I was getting low. I only recently had to switch inhalers because my usual one was unavailable. Funnily enough the alternative seems to be working better ,😁

Just seen on BBC it's chlorphenamine but no doubt the others will soon be snapped up

I feel really sorry for people with asthma..but at least these days there is some decent help with inhalers. My grandmother had it…and back in the day….I am talking mid last century here😏 I remember watching her inhale the smoke…yes breathing in smoke…from putting a match to some powder called…quite untruthfully “potters asthma cure”…….but she reckoned it helped her!

Oh my goodness! It's amazing what 'cures' they had back then. I'm fortunate mine is mild/ moderate and well controlled.

Yes, my mother had to use this too. It would be lit and then it would smoulder for several hours, but it did bring relief. I have been fortunate in that I had asthma as a child and so did my younger brother, but we both 'grew' out of it as predicted. I remember writhing on the floor struggling to breathe. In those days Ephedrine was used as a tablet to be popped under the tongue which really helped for milder cases. As you say, AC, no inhalers. It as quite frightening watching my dear mother sometimes.

I had cousins with asthma and eczema but I got off lightly as a child and an adult in fact I only have hay fever.

It was the first thing my Rheumatologist asked when I was originally diagnosed

I was diagnosed with late onset asthma in my 50s …so being older I had to really get my head around it and I only ever had two really bad asthma attacks….I moved out of a highly polluted area & my consultant said that was the only reason he could think of it disappearing so quickly. To actually have to live with it forever must be really dreadful.I spent most of my life losing my inhalers!

Your reply made me smile! I'm always losing things!🙂

Feminax works if they run out…

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply to

Who are you replying to…..Feminax is a low dose NSAID….For period pains…I don’t think it would help for Hay Fever or Asthma?

in reply to AgedCrone

Apparently so, it contains antihistamine..

AgedCrone profile image
AgedCrone in reply to

If it does contain an antihistamine I doubt it would be strong enough to control hayfever and …I seem to remember it contains codeine so definitely shouldn’t take that if you have asthma as it can depress breathing…best stick to Loratidine…or If you want a good sleep glug down a couple of Piriton!

nomoreheels in reply to

Feminax is simply fast acting ibuprofen Crip Lady, an expensive branded option of a generic NSAID! Some of the other Feminax formulas include codeine & caffeine but none have an anti histamine I'm afraid.

When I was backpacking once a lad took some of mine and said it contained antihistamine. He had asked if I had any hay fever meds, and I replied FX was all I had…

Auto suggestion is a wonderful thing I wonder if anybody has ever done a survey of the number of people who recommend XXX as a wonderful sleeping pill…even when they wake up in the morning it’s still on the bedside table?

I thought I read somewhere it was just piriton but it’s probably the lot by now. My husband bulk orders loratidine from Amazon - he takes it right through the season. He’s just looking at Amazon - £3.95 for six months supply! Cheap but it works.

It was on radio 4 this morning where it was emphasised that it's one of the ingredients in Piriton that was in short supply. The 'expert' they were speaking with said there are plenty of suitable alternatives that aren't affected. Speak to your pharmacist for advice.

I grabbed some Loratidine……can’t stay awake with Piriton…but it’s probably like paracetamol …it was scarce for a while……the price rocketed….then it was cheap as chips again!

Well for once we are ahead of the game as my daughter bought what she thought was 1 packet on internet. Turned out to be 12 boxes. So they may be useful after all! X
