Finger has gone awol

New week, New finger problem.

Last week I somehow managed to do what I done to my finger in the photos provided below. No idea how i`ve done it, I think I remember during the day it wasn`t like that but I remember tapping my knuckle on something and then hurting it a bit but thought nothing of it, It wasn`t even the same finger/knuckle I was tapping. About 30 minutes later I started to go a bit weird and found that section of my hand going numb about 3x and hasn`t been numb since. As you can see my finger has curved right round and is almost on top of my other finger and at a certain position it looks crooked. I have been able to use it and move it and such. However theres also a problem with the two knuckles on the right as you can see in the photos, It`s bruised and they look sunken in, It`s also a bit swollen too. I have been getting pain around my pinkie. When you touch one of the knuckles theres also pain. Not so much pain around the other parts anymore.

I went to minor injuries because I thought I dislocated it, It was similar to my previous dislocation I had with the bruising and such so thought that was it. Had an xray and turns out theres nothing wrong with it which leaves me absolutely baffled at to what this is. Now they told me that if it`s still painful after a week to go to the main hospital in my area....No idea why. They said if it doesn`t move from that position to go to my GP and they would give me physio...Less said about that the better. They gave me a splint and I was on my way.

So I`m here asking this question because I`m not sure what to do, Theres no clear picture and I don`t wanna be sitting in a&e for ages for them to say the same thing

One thing that I do think has maybe triggered it is that I lift heavy boxes all day every day. I`m also hypermobile - Hence why I thought it was dislocated.

Okay. Here’s my opinion. See your G.P. unless it’s righting itself by lunchtime. From the look of your hands, you’re a young woman. Don’t wait and have regrets.

Good old RA doing its thing darling. My fingers are bending badly now so i can see why you are worried. Get it checked out again if you are still worried,.xxx

Hi. Not a solution, but if you see a MSK physio they may be able to make you some ‘resting splints’ which would encourage your fingers to move back. Also maybe look into getting some finger support for when you are at work. I found finger splints to be pretty useless as they fell off whenever I used my fingers. You must be able to get something that helps you without them remaining immobile. Good luck.

Looks like Dupuytrens contracture to me , I have it in my right hand , the guides in the palms of your hands get really lumpy and the sheaths around the guides lose their flexibility and cause the fingers to curl . Just an idea , worth an ask to your GP when you see him , good luck . Google it 👍

Time to talk to your rheumy team maybe? If you have a helpline I'd be using it. You have lovely hands now, so I'm jealous, and would hate for it if that 'bend' became permanent

I agree with the others, give you a rheumy team a call, fingers do strange things when RA isn’t controlled and it’s best to get it looked at and sorted early on to reduce problems later.

Hi everyone, Thank you for your responses. I never would`ve imagined it would be RA or thought it would be...I mean why would I think it was I`m young, Nobody when they`re young think they would get RA. I`m going to schedule a appointment with my doctors after this week however i`m a bit doubtful about it. I`ve been having problems with my other hand and have had to go to the doctors about it numerous times as it`s causing me pain and I`ve been hoping to get to a solution for it quickly and at my last appointment I asked if it could be RA or osteo and she said yes it could be but she quickly brushed it off and that was that...Nothing more was done and I`m a bit dubious the same thing would happen here. I just think people who are young get brushed off so easily, Like you`re young you haven`t got RA why would you think you have, But you`re the one asking them for the answer because you have no clue how are we meant to know...I dunno if that made sense but all in all i`m a bit dubious b.c i`m scared they will brush me off as they have done with my other hand which i`m still in pain with. You can check out my other numerous threads on that saga.

Sorry I thought you already had RA when I replied before . My RA was diagnosed when I was 26 and there are others here diagnosed as children so it shouldn’t be dismissed as you can get it at any age. I hope you get some answers RA or not 🤗

Hi there.

As Kitty rightly says, many of us were diagnosed at much younger ages. I was diagnosed about a month after turning 14 and had been experiencing symptoms for a good 6 months. I'm 53 now. The hardest part was getting my parents to believe me and take me to the GP! In hindsight, I've realised that my GP at the time suspected it immediately from the range of symptoms I'd been having and the swollen fingers, etc. As such, I was diagnosed straightaway. I've always been very grateful for that.

Best of luck X

Update - My other finger has gone the same way, The exact same finger it is too! This is all making me a bit nervous so i`m booking an appointment with the GP tomorrow.

Update been to the GP. First off it`s not arthritis, I don`t have any symptoms of it as of yet such as swelling and it didn`t show up on the xray. However I am prone to it due to my hypermobility so I know i`ll get it sooner or later. What the situation could be is a tendon or ligament issue due to my hypermobility, Using them repetitvely due to my work. Will have physio on them and maybe a splint.

It is good to hear that you had a consultation and diagnosis, I hope physio / splitting can help.

Update...

Still waiting on an appointment, However theres been a signifcant change. Ever since the doctors appointment where I told them about the fingers and how they`ve gone awol I have been having trouble with my pinkie finger. Now when the deformity appeared on my fingers there was also something up with my pinkie so this isnt a seperate issue, Just at the time it wasn`t so bothersome. However since that last appointment it has. It`s my pinkie and the knuckle below, Albeit the knuckle isnt so bothersome but it hurts. My pinkie is hurting all the time from small dull aches to strong pain, Whenever I`m moving it, resting it even hurts. I can touch it however, and I soon found this out after my appointment, whenever I touch it or examine it the pain comes afterwards and it just doesn`t go and it`s what happened to the finger next to it after my appointment, She examined it and as soon as I got home it was a strong pain all day and i`m finding it with my pinkie too. Whenever I`m holding stuff it hurts and it`s literally all day and it`s getting to the point where i`m scared to move or touch it because the pain won`t go away. So far it`s kept me up for two nights. It looks a bit swollen too, Hard to tell because padding on the back always looks like that. Anyway i`ve had to take some medication just to relieve me of pain. It`s starting to trouble me...and I just know theres something not right and I dunno what to do. She told me to come back if it becomes swollen, But I wasn`t sure if it became painful. I dunno how long it would be before my appointment and I don`t wanna be in this pain all the time. On the xray nothing showed up as far as I am aware.

Could anyone advise me what to do please?

Unfortunately RA and hands and swelling all come together . I have weeks on end when hands are swollen and painful then I get some calm then they start again. Is your RA meds working elsewhere. It could be a longer flare up.
