I am injecting 15mg methotrexate once a week. I have a total loss of appetite. Don’t want to eat anything. Have to really force myself to eat. I reall would like my appetite back. Take Folic acid daily, except injection day.
MTX has completely upset my digestive system. Mind you, I had IBS to start with. Now having a colonoscopy next week after a positive bowel screening test. Hey-ho. hope it wasn't the MTX.
I was advised to inject MTX at night around 8 pm, so that I slept through most of the side effects. On wakening I was always hungry. MTX did reap havoc on my digestive system though for the whole time I was on it.
I was on 15mg methotrexate and it affected my appetite just like you it also affected my smell of food as some made me feel sick.Is methotrexate helping you?? It didn't help my RA so was taken off it
I weighed 6 1/2 stone after two years on methotrexate, I am 5’6”. My stomach was like a fire pit most of the time. These are known side effects, not everyone gets them and now you take folic acid daily which I am sure helps. Methotrexate is on my never again drug list, it works for some but for others it is a good for initial control (an extremely cheap drug in the scheme of ra drugs). Keep a list of side effects and then speak to your rheumatologist/nurse.
I inject last thing at night but the day after I have to make myself eat and sometimes even the day after that. It gives me a low level nausea. Higher doses have made this worse so now I am on 15. Strangely enough if I can make myself eat it does help for a bit, so maybe if you can stomach something bland you might get some temporary relief. MTX does have different side effects for different people so I would say if you are losing weight because it takes your apetite away then it's time to explore alternatives.
I found that methotrexate upset my gut throughout from large mouth ulcers, to reflux oesophagitis, to intestinal hurry and griping pains. That was just me and I know lots of people are happy on it and do well, but it wasn't the right drug for me.
Hello, sorry your experiencing problems, I take my methotrexate at night 20mg once a week, but like you I have to force myself to eat, which sometimes is hard as I don't want anything, I sometimes find a cup of tea helps (not as strong as my usual coffee) i had stomach upsets for about 4 months, been on it now for about 2 and a half years, in the last 6 months it doesn't seem to be working as well as it has ☹ have you told your nurse or consultant, I mentioned it 9 months ago at my last nurse appointment but types yet nothing has changed. I hope you consultant is able to help you or suggest something that will help you. X
