I am going on a all inclusive holiday in the winter I have been on sulfasalazine since January 2021 and doing really well would I be really stupid to stay of the medication so I can enjoy alcohol not going daft but having a couple of wines every day
Am I just being silly: I am going on a all inclusive... - NRAS
Am I just being silly

But would you want to risk flaring on your holiday? Has your rheumy told you to avoid alcohol? I’d follow their advice as they know you and your meds, but here’s some info from Versus Arthritis
versusarthritis.org/about-a...
Thanks kittyJ I only see a nurse at my practice haven't seen rheumatologist since Jan when I was diagnosed the nurse says it's ok in moderation ie 14 units per week but I know I would be having a wee bit more than that I was just thinking if I stopped the medication for I week it wouldn't do much harm I suppose that's not ideal
I’d ask your nurse the question you’ve asked us as we can’t tell you whether to or not, we can’t give that kind of advice. Have a good time whatever you decide.
Thanks kittyj It's nice of you to reply I will ask the nurse and if her advice is to stay on my medication I will heed it I don't really want to go back the way I suppose I could have a couple and then soda water and lime 🤭
I wouldn’t chance it for the sake of a Hangover ….or worse. If you are comfortably settling on SSZ…let it do it’s job….easing your RA.
If you upset your blood levels ….it could mess up your reaction to the drug & you’d be back to square one.
Be thankful you have found something that helps,,,,& wait for the next holiday to hit the booze!
Thanks AgedCrone I think deep down I know your right I was just thinking I could maybe get away with it but probably not
It’s your pain Jennyrenny….I’m sure you will have a lovely holiday without …oops the alcohol & once you are settled on a drug regime that suits you….you may be one of the lucky ones….like me…who can drink in moderation. But if I go over the top ….even after20+ years…I still wish I hadn’t!
Thanks AgedCrone I have not had much alcohol for months now and have really not missed it that much I have been getting my blood tested every week then 2 weeks finally I am now at 2 months and bloods have been steady so my holiday 5 months away the company I am going with really enjoy drinking a lot of alcohol so I will just be sensible and keep within the 14 units at least I can have so alcohol I just wanted to be normal and be able to join my family and have a good time but I really dont want the pain back so I will keep taking my meds and behave myself
Do what a friend of mine did many years ago ….we were sitting on the windowsill on a very high floor in a hotel in New York drinking-and I knew I should only have one more ….so I went on to just tonic but didn’t mention I wasn’t having any gin …as I was pouring the drinks ….but my friend was knocking back the gin and normally she wasn’t much of a drinker …so I was thinking she’s gonna ofall off the window sill any minute. But she didn’t …& we all went off and met up the next morning ….most of them with terrible hangovers….. but she was as fine as nine pence ….so I said to her how come you drank so much & feel OK?
So she said….Oh . I didn’t drink much…..I was pouring it out of the window!
Everyone thought she was the life and soul of the party …well she was the only one stone cold sober anyway!
Brilliant maybe I could do the same my son is a terrible one for saying it will be ok just have another one and I don't argue with him ☺️
I drink fever tree tonic, no gin. Lots of ice and lime. Delicious, and stops those akward questions of why aren't you drinking?I've had no alcohol for over 4 years, used to love my wine and G and T, don't miss it at all now.
Awesome story! I barely drink unless you count 2 beers over 3 months. I'm in a state where it seems like everyone drinks, and they drink to the extreme. So when I go out, I'll order either a non-alcoholic beer or a cranberry juice, in a glass, so it looks like I'm having either an actual beer or a cranberry juice with vodka. It just stops the questions of why I'm not drinking. I don't want to tell people I can't walk a straight line sober, and if there is a problem with my brain, I don't want to deteriorate it more with alcohol.
Love you reply
I was told it was ok on LEF and AZA and Benepali and even with my CKD I can still have a glass of two just don't abuse the booze. And wine with soda water is lovely.
Awe..........I think you should just stick to the moderate amount and stay on your medication. I know that I will totally miss not having my red wine at the next all inclusive I go to. I drank a glass or two every single day before I went on these medications so I know how you feel........ But we just gotta be good.😇
oh....I just read AJAY575.........maybe that is a better answer than mine!!! lol. Maybe check to see if the medication you are on goes right out of your system. I know that my leflunimide has a long life so it wouldn't do any good for me not to take it for a week.
I'm sure you can drink (in moderation) while on slz, when I was on it I wasn't told not to. I was told it's okay to drink on mtx, but my bloods apart from once have been fine since being diagnosed in 2008. They always say stick to the guidelines of 14 units a week.
To be frank, yes you would. Is alcohol really worth risking a flare for? I used to love wine and drank it quite regularly. I started mxt 19 years ago and stopped drinking at the same time. I haven't missed it at all and have still enjoyed fabulous holidays. Don't risk it.
Thanks Sheila_G I know you're correct it's not worth the risk I remember the pain and distress I was in before my medication so I will stick to drinking in moderation
First which country do you live in and which country are you going to!I used to pre pandemic, but in UK it's not really feasible at moment
my typos arthritis fingers on phone,I wouldn't go unless it moves to green list.
On costs of PCR tests at 150 each approx,
And being on amber equally means it can move to red as well as to green
I am double vaccinated, but all of Spain and most of Europe is not
I used to go to , Lanzarote, fueterventura and once gran Canarian for a week any time between November and march.
Winter sun helped me .
Beware my pharmacy boss/owner yes I still work a bit!,Went to am ber country, one person on plane has a positive test whole plane had to self isolate!,he can afford the time and tests as we sell them. He was going to go to Everest base camp, until it became red!
I think that going at all at the present moment is a bit silly unless things changed, which they might
Os I went to Tenerife over twenty years ago playas americas very busy, not now apparently Costa de Adele is very pleasant according a friend who stated in a.n all inclusive
Is it worth it for a couple of drinks darling. xxxxx
Hi. I’ve been on SSZ for around 4 years. Whilst I’ve cut back on the booze when I’m on holiday (normally AI) I tend not to hold back nor stop the tablets and am happy to report there’s been no negative impact on pain etc.
Now I appreciate this won’t be the same for everyone but it’s certainly been my experience when it comes to holiday drinking and taking SSZ.....
I holiday 3 or 4 times a year in Adeje and have been to your hotel a number of times and can certainly recommend the spiced rum and Diet Coke.....
Yes its a beautiful hotel been a couple of years ago hopefully alls well and we manage to go 🤞
As soon as it I'd safe my money is on 2022/3I will book too,buy buy them even the basic price will have gone up,
And it will be with a travel agent and with full cancellation insurance etc and option to move.
Because guess who had unknowingly booked on Dec 2019 for march 2020 !!

I think from what the article says that in moderation you can have a couple of drinks daily on Sulphasalazine, but I guess it all depends on how fast your liver breaks down the med. When I started Sulphasalazine 26 years ago I was told the maximum amount of alcohol per week had to be 2 units. As I had stopped drinking except for an occasional glass of champers or wine so it didn’t bother me. Alcohol had started to make me feel unwell after I was diagnosed with RA. I had a friend who stopped taking Mtx as he preferred to drink as he was told by my nurse also he should limit his beer to 2 pints a week back in the 1990s. As I said it was a long time ago when the alcohol advice was given to me as a new RA patient.
I was on sulphasalazine for 20 years and I had the odd drop of alcohol to no effect. I wouldn’t stop your meds
My Rhuemy said being on salz you can drink in moderation, like everything else really , just have a great holiday 👍
You’ll be fine.. I’ve been on Sulfasalazine for ten years and drink occasionally.. I’m still alive… just make sure you drink lots of water… Enjoy your hols xx

Thanks CripLady for reply I will do
