Referred pain and swelling

Hi all. Had a little fall at work this morning. Slipped on some mud and went down on my right knee (in front of students, I'm a teacher, so my pride was the thing most hurt). Knee grazed and a bruised but all fine. Then about 6 hours later, in the middle of class, my right foot really started to hurt. Throbbing, stiff and my shoe was tight. Short story...couldn't walk on it, had to leave my car at work and get a lift home. Its slightly more swollen than normal but no bruising. Took some pain relief which has helped but it's still stiff and hurts when I move it.

My question is...is this part of my inflammatory disease? It feels a bit like a sprain but nothing else about it supports this. Does this type of thing happen i.e an injury in one place causing an inflammatory flare somewhere else.

(Working diagnosis: inflammatory arthritis and a connective tissue disorder)

Thanks in advance. C7

Sorry to hear you had a fall today. I do hope the details of your accident and injuries were reported but if not please do it when you are next in school. It could be important if other problems develop later. I know as I had a fall at school just before I retired. I turned an ankle on an piece of uneven ground and fell on my left knee. I had knee problems as a result for many months later an made an accident claim against the school. Much more recently, an X-ray has shown a small break around the ankle which I didn't know I had but is causing problems now!!

I can't answer your specific question but I am wondering whether you could have broken a small bone in your foot (there are so many of them) which is causing the inflammatory response but no bruising. If you have a minor injuries unit near you I recommend you go and get it checked out, with an X-ray if possible, in case future problems develop.

Do try to keep the weight off your foot and elevate it to keep the swelling to a minimum. I have found ice packs (or a bag of frozen peas as a substitute) comforting and help to reduce swelling and pain in my feet. And when you are comfy on the sofa with your foot elevated you need to be waited on of course!!

Thank you. I honestly don't think there's anything broken but I'll see what it's like in the morning and if it's the same/worse. I'll go to a walk in centre. C7x

I agree with Lola - go and get an X-ray just to be safe. My body does tend to overreact to these kinds of things and a bump will set off a chain reaction, but it’s always best to err on the side of caution. Hope you feel better soon x

I would get it checked to be on the safe side. A jar a fall or a knock can unfortunately result in a flare if the joint but best to make sure x

A flare even in a joint that wasn't directly injured? That's what I'm trying to get to the bottom of. I would understand if it was my knee but it seems weird that my ankle is the problem and has responded in this way. I could have strained something in my ankle I suppose but I would have thought there'd be pain/swelling much sooner.

Yes it happened to me . Hurt my wrist lifting a bag of potato’s then my elbow flared for 4 months . 🤷🏽‍♀️don’t ask me how. I have also been on a long car journey that set of a flare in my ankle.. go figure .. it’s a contrary disease .. when you fell on your knee was your toes still in contact with the ground and the heel of your foot lifted ( like a right angle) ? Could have strained you ligaments. X

It has been a season of falls for me... To answer your question - Yes. I was recently knocked over by a boisterous large dog. I suffered a lot of bruising and a rib injury, and whilst I fell onto my left wrist, the weak dodgy one, a few hours after the fall my right wrist went into full flare mode and was agony but it disappeared as quickly as it came and has been fine since.

It is like the RA gremlin is making sure you know he is there (yes my RA Gremlin is male - haha).

Go gently

Wow! That is exactly the info I was wondering about. I had no idea this happened. Thank you. Btw: I am starting to imagine my 'whatever it is' as Puk 😉

You may have a fracture. Should see a doctor and get an X-ray to be sure. Hope all is well soon.

I hope your foot is a bit better by now. I get a lot of feet pain but it definitely sounds like you’ve done some damage and need to get it X-Rayed . Good luck let us know the outcome
