Etoricoxib/Arcoxia- is it better to take in the morning or evening ?

I am new to this drug and would like to know if other users find it better to take in the morning or in the evening. I wish to avoid getting any side effects of feeling drowsy or dizzy. Thanks.

Morning

I’ve taken 90mg Arcoxia for years and I’ve taken it both at morning and at night- for me. I’ve noticed no discernible difference.

As Arcoxia is an anti inflammatory, I’ve never known that it might make one drowsy? I’ve certainly never felt drowsy or dizzy when taking it.

However, it can be rough on ones stomach so be sure to take something like imperative to protect it.

What I will say , is of all the drugs I take for RA ( biologics, Methotrexate and Leflunomide), this is the one that if I miss, I notice it very quickly!

Best of luck going forward x

Thank you . Yes,I am already on Omeprazole thankfully. I read that someone felt tired on it, which is unusual as it is an NSAID like you have said, but it is stated as a common side effect on the Patient Advice Leaflet. I am on a high dose of Pregablin and the side effects of brain fog are only just settling so I was a bit concerned. I also asked the question as I want to ensure I have optimal relief while at work. I am back to work next week after time off sick😳.Thank you again for your quick reply !

Hiya Celtic 74, welcome. I've taken Arcoxia (etoricoxib) for around 10 years & have never had any ill effects for it, not even when I first started it so hopefully it will be the same for you. I have always taken it with my evening meds at around 8pm. My Consultant suggested I did so I’d benefit from it in the mornings.

Do you already take or have you been prescribed a ppi (stomach protector) to take alongside? If not please ask if you should, NSAIDs, even COX-2's, are notoriously hard on the tum.

I hope you find it helps.

Thank you. Yes I am already on Omeprazole. 👍.I am glad taking it at night is working for you in the mornings. Does the effect last throughout the day ?

At the dose I’m on just now not completely but I do take other meds which compensate, plus intermittent use of a topical NSAID, Voltarol 2.32%, which my Rheumy is aware of.

I used to take 90mg but following a review a few years ago regarding evidence supported efficacy of 60mg in RD patients it was reduced. I did try reducing it further to alternate days but I'm back to taking it each evening again.

Can I ask what you’ve been prescribed it for & what dose?

Possible RA. Also on Pregablin 200mgs twice a day which has solved the sciatica pain from slipped discs and DDD. 60mgs Arcoxia as having other inflammatory type pain in back specifically in right side of sacrum and in SI joint. Also have pain and stiffness in hands, ankles and elbows. Back pain is very bad at times and a very different pain to the sciatica pain. This is all new since March !! I am 46. Saw a Rheumatologist in Dec and started on Celebrex. This was changed to Arcoxia yesterday after MRI. Was told to stop Celebrex for 2 weeks prior to MRI. I thought the Celebrex did not work until I had to stop it. It did ease things but not completely. I have been told that if the Arcoxia does not work then I will start Methotrexate.

I was advised by gp to take it at night as pain from bursitis in hip was disturbing my sleep, it helped.

Sounds as though you've a few things going on. I would think your Rheumy is trying to work out what's what. Mine came on suddenly too, back in 2008 when I was 48, so similar age. My GP prescribed Celebrex (celecoxib) & pain relief. I was told to stop taking them a couple of days before my diagnostic appointment a couple of weeks later.

I started on hydroxychloroquine, another DMARD. The only involvement I had, or had erosions, were my feet at the time. That stopped working after a year & when I started MTX which has been the best med for me. It's considered the gold standard for RD, many of us have tried or are on it, even years down the line as it's a good anchor drug for the more hefty meds, biologics.

I also have pregabalin in my armoury, 150mg twice daily, morning & evening to help deal with neuralgia.

Keep in touch to let us know how you're getting on?

Thank you so much for your help and advice. Really appreciate it. Will keep in touch 🙂

The only side effect I get from Arcoxia is that it makes drinks taste different, especially water.

Thank you. Do you take it at night or in the morning ?

I too get no discernible side effects from arcoxia, and it does help me a lot. Hope you find it relieves your pain.

Any time of day, just depends when I’m in pain.

Can take it whenever it suits. I take it in the morning. I tend to take everything that might make me sleepy at night, and anything else in the morning. ..............purely because I drive. I take omezrapoleat night, so that there is a good gap between.
