Is the vaccination protocol the wrong way round?

Just a thought really... possibly a crazy one.

Since the virus is spread mostly by the most active in society i.e. the young, those in the 18 - 40 group and secondary school kids maybe - should they get the vaccine quickly. If they had immunity wouldn't it automatically protect the rest of society and get the economy moving more quickly? This along with all key workers.

Would love to hear your thoughts on this?

Just because they are vaccinated won't necessarily mean that they will stop spreading it to others. I think it would give a false sense of security. Would they still socially distance and use hand sanitizer after they've been vaccinated.

The elderly and clinically vulnerable are most at risk so I think it sensible to protect them first.

They can't spread it if they don't have it and are immune, it passes through the airways mostly. It was just a thought and there are very clever people who develop protocols so they must be right - but sometimes the instinct is to protect rather than defend.

Yes, but they can still spread it if they touch a contaminated surface and then take it into someone elses environment. That's what I was meaning to put across.

They may be protected but can still put others at risk.

I see your point, but the vaccine is only about 50% effective after the first dose and needs the second dose 3 weeks later to increase immunity and protect. So it can still be caught and spread in that 3 week period.

I also feel that those with most social contact should be protected early in the process - so taxi drivers, supermarket cashiers, teachers etc should be next in line after the medical workers and then the over 80’s.

I am retired so able to restrict social contacts, and have managed so far so can wait another few months.

Good point! But I think they are worried about the oldies and CEV like us clogging up the NHS beds and putting it under strain more than anything else. And let’s face it, if we get ill most of us will need a lot of high dependency care. ☹️

We don't know yet whether people who have been vaccinated against Covid might pick up virus aerosols from someone infected and carry them for a short while to pass them onto someone else. Please, if you've had the vaccination continue wearing your mask to reduce this possibility until we know.

There is an argument for protecting workers and contributors to the economy (tending to be the younger people) before the elderly - but this would require a very high level of people to be vaccinated - over 90% - before others would benefit from the reduction in transmission. The elderly would have, therefore, to 'shield' for that length of time. It's the same argument as herd immunity and it just doesn't work in practice.

Funnily enough, we had that discussion the other day. Seems like a pretty sensible option to us. 🤷‍♀️
