I had both sides of the bunions corrected last year. I have also been constantly wearing insoles for my fallen arches (pre and post bunion surgeries) for nearly 30 years now. At present the 2nd (slightly longer than the big toe) and the fourth toes on both feet have become crooked with callouses forming. Lately they gave me some pain after a gentle exercise or during/after a 30 minutes walk. I saw a local chiropodist privately who advised me to use Gel tubing or taping to straighten them. The situation improved slightly, however, I don’t wear them to bed and am having pain at night. Has anyone had any information/experience using a chiropractioner to manipulate the foot joints to try to re-align the joint? The problem is not severe enough to seek surgical intervention at the moment. Any comments will be most appreciated.

I’ve got one really bad hammer toe, the second one, on one foot and a not so bad one on the other foot. I’m at a loss what to do, so can’t suggest anything, though I did look up gel tubes on the internet today! I have be careful to wear shoes which don’t touch them or the tops bleed.
Our podiatry service discharged me probably because I didn’t need ‘scraped and sanded‘ and they can’t really fix structurally wonky feet.
I’m not sure I would use a chiropractor to manipulate the foot joints like you suggest. My hammer toes are due to destruction of the joints and what you suggest would be very painful and wouldn’t work. I would talk to your rheumy team or GP to see if anything can be done for you. If it’s affecting your sleep then I think it’s severe enough to get treatment not necessarily surgery. Failing that have you tried the daytime remedy at night if it helps during the day it might at night too.
Thanks for your reply. I think my hammer toes are resulted from my dropped arches and previous bunion. I will keep researching to see what is best for it. I am doing some toe exercise which seems to getting some results and the pain is getting less. I will contact my Rheumatologist if the condition has got worse.
The link below shows a chiropractor to check the location of the mis-aligned joint and then manipulating the individual toe joints to improve its flexibility. This video was done in the State.
In the meantime I am doing simple exercise and have also bought some Hammer Toe Crest pads to relief the discomfort from hammer toe and blister pain. I hope these would solve the problem in the short term.
You say you think they are caused by by your dropped arches but have you had this confirmed? I would speak to your rheumy before letting someone manipulate you like this, check what is the cause and go from there. I hope you get sorted.
