Do steroids orally affect MRI results and how long to be off then before an MRI?

Hi

I’m due to have MRIs on my ankles and lower back in middle of June however I’m on a short course of steroids which finishes next week.

How long after finishing my course of oral steroids would be better to have the scans arranged for as I don’t want the results skewed by the steroids reducing the inflammation.

Thanks ☺️

I think you would need a medical expert response on that one.

Inflammation can be seen just by looking at any joint swelling, blood markers. The joints ability to function/move correctly all show inflammation.

I am not sure but I think the MRI would still show inflammation, more importantly I think the MRI will really show them a detailed picture of the joints current condition. Erosion of the bone.

I don't think delaying the MRI is a great idea.

It is very individual, with some people the inflammation comes roaring back in 48 hours and with others it can take weeks. Tell the radiographer that you have been on steroids and they will take that into account.
