I was diagnosed with RA,and or PSA or both a year ago. Since I am sero negative the Rhuematologist isn't sure. My wrists are badly swollen and lots of bone erosion in fingers and wrists. l have been able to control swelling and pain in the wrists somewhat with severe diet restrictions (Vegan) but not enough so I began Orencia last month. What I don't understand is the puffy skin tight fingers every morning. What causes that? Seems to start about 4 in the morning. Anybody experience the same thing? I wouldn't call them "stiff". I would call them "puffy".I am wondering if the swollen fingers are typical of psoriatic arthritis whereas the wrists are more typical of RA.

I get this regularly . It’s a sign the disease is active. Mine gets so bad that I can’t bend my fingers all day sometimes usually have to have a steroid injection. I’m s- negative and methotrexate worked well for 3 years not working quite so well now

I have had Rheumatoid Arthritis, Osteoarthritis and Osteoporosis for quite a number of years now.

I have had 2 bones removed from both hands because of the Rheumatoid Arthritis.

Now my Orthopaedic Surgeon wants to do a Complete Wrist Replacement, but my Pain Management Doctors have told me NOT to have it done because it's not a normal procedure, like a Knee Replacement or Hip Replacement.

It's a very complicated procedure that doesn't get done very often.

But i had already made up my mind NOT to have it done anyway.

My fingers get very sore and puffy as well, but they also get very Hot. I have to take my rings off before I go to bed because they swell up so much.

I was diagnosed with Raynards Syndrome when I was in my 20s,that makes your fingers go Puffy.

When your fingers go Puffy, do they go hot as well????.

Was just wondering if you had the beginning of Raynards Syndrome.

Hope your Doctors can sort it out for you. Take Care 😊.Gjkas

When my disease is active ( I have RA) and I have inflammation my fingers get swollen and puffy which leads to stiffness and they will be hot to touch and incredibly painful. When quite bad the skin will go taught and shiny. You need to show your Rheumatologist as active disease leads to permanent joint damage. I am usually given steroids to bring down the inflammation. Maybe your medication needs review too ( or longer to take effect )?

I have this too. I think it’s a sign that the disease is not well controlled - how long it lasts every morning is often a Q the rheumatologist uses to assess disease activity. I have Palindomic RA and RA. And Psoriasis...

I also have puffy fingers although only two are like this. I have also noticed that I can't bend those two very far. I showed them to the rhuemy at the last visit and she didn't seem concerned although she is sending me for ultrasound scans on my hands and feet. Personally I don't think that my disease has ever been under control at all.

I have sero-negatice PsA, R.A and also O.A. and fibromyalgia. I have asked about going on biologics but she always says they wouldn't work for me because I have O.A.

I get it. Its the inflammation of R A . It means your disease it not well controlled as its caused by the build up of fluid in the synovial capsule around your joints. Its one of the key indicators of RD . Contact your rheumatologist and ask for a review of meds as the swelling and inflammation is a sign of the disease causing possible damage xx

I find wearing support and compression gloves from the Occupational Therapist helps with this problem. They are still more swollen, stiff and painful in the morning but less so. Then I put them into hot water, then cold (two basins are a wonderful idea in a bathroom!) and wiggle them around to get them moving.

But they are MUCH worse when I have a flare, so it's likely that your disease is not yet under control.

Thank you all for your replies. The concensus is that the swollen fingers means the disease is not under control. After 6 months of rice, veggies ,sweet potatoes and not much else Ihave given up and on to Orencia. We will see. Thanks again

All my dwellings, ( non that bad or painful) have also been 'puffy 'rather than swollen. It's happened twice with index finger and felt stiff like a sausage. I felt like it would burst if I bent it too tight. After about an hour it went down but it's been bigger than the other index finger for some years.

Forgot to say that was diagnosed with undifferentiated inflammatory arthritis last Tuesday. Because my symptoms are intermittent and mostly mild to moderate with only occasional severe/debilitating pain, I feel like a fraud and I still haven't started the hydroxychloroquine I was prescribed.
