oh boy. If I get hurt physically does that set my immune system off?

I went skating and was careless. Cracked my helmet when I feel backwards and used my hand/wrist/arm to break my fall. So my fingers are all puffy and my wrist is swollen/sore etc. Before I had inflammatory arthritis I knew what to expect. But now I am wondering if this could this lead to a flare? Also, I have a rheumatology appointment on Thursday. Maybe I should call and tell them that my right fingers and wrist are all puffy so she would NOT be able to see how I am doing with inflammation from the arthritis. Maybe she won't care. Anyone have any ideas?

If I knock myself, walk into something, trip and fall I can experience a 'mini flare', almost as if the surrounding joints come out in sympathy to the trauma. Personally, I would keep the rheumatology appointment, your rheumatologist should be able to see from your other joints and your explanation how you are doing.

I hope the swelling settles soon.

Probably a silly question but did you get your wrist checked out at a&e to check it’s not broken? Maybe not a flare so I’d get it looked at. 🤗

Thanks. I think it is fine and just sore and swollen. I can move it and all my fingers. I just don’t know what to expect now that I have inflammatory arthritis and am on leflunimide. So far my body does not seem to be going crazy against more than my injured body parts. Yay.

It’s just if I fell and then my wrist and fingers were sore and swollen my first thought wouldn’t be that it’s a flare😊 Take care 🤗

For sure. The wrist etc swelling is definitely from the fall. I was just wondering if this would lead to a flare. It is now Wednesday and no flare so I think really thing is going to be ok. I think I am paranoid because I had such a rough time after a couple of the vaccinations and am just scared of flares.

Have you been checked out by a dr since your fall. If you have an accident like that you wll suffer more than a normal person who doesn't have RA. So iwould advice get yourself checked out. xxxx

I can only answer from a personal perspective to say that I broke my ankle in September (not badly, just a crack) but it didn’t lead to a flare.

I was trying to take cork tiles of my kitchen floor a few months back, I accidentally hammered the top of my hand, I did have gloves on and it was sore. Next day it was bruised badly but it did get better after a few weeks. My hand and knuckles are now red and swollen and very sore, I also wondered if the trauma of this has started a new flare as this hand was my good one.

I think it does not necessarily follow. I have had a full on RTA and quite a few falls and been skiing, ice skating and doing various other adventurous things since having RA.I am 70 now and it started at 23 and I don't think you should stop doing things if you are able to. I have not found that falls have caused flars. We are all different though so just notice and jot things down. There has been cases where onset has possibly been linked to an accident along with other factors but there are so many theories and onset is complicated. The only thing thats definitely caused flares for me is a few months after each of my 3 daughters were born. Also possibly when you have infections then it may kickstart a flare.

Just a thought…. If you “ cracked” your helmet then just think of your poor head that didn’t get cracked . Well done for wearing your helmet.
