Has anyone suffered headaches during the night when taking methotrexate and prednisilone?
These are sharp neuralgia type pains down one side of my head and ear - I have read on the internet that this can be connected to RA or immune system types of illnesses. My first post so please excuse if the format or details are not clear.
Thanks

Sorry to hear you’re having some difficulties. When I have unexplained pain, I ask myself some questions:
1. Have I experienced this before?
2. Have I physically done something that might have caused this pain?
It’s very easy to blame pain/new symptoms on an existing condition/medication. Problem is that whilst we might suffer from RA etc., it doesn’t mean that other processes are not happening.
It’s very easy to Google whatever you like + RA and get a response that describes your situation, which is not safe, because if you’re worried, a medical person is who you should be talking to, cheers Deb
Hi Deb , thanks for the reply, I am undergoing tests but so far there does not appear to be any reason for the headaches - hopefully, they may go as quickly as they came, it’s just after three weeks with disturbed sleep it catches up with you. Best wishes
I had bad daytime headaches on MTX but rest, so sleep too, helped.
However, I get bad pain in head ie behind ears in the mastoid bones, also at base of skull and up sides of head and down neck to collarbones, shoulders and arms.
This is something for which I want answers as to the cause. I am waiting for my local Rheumatology Helpline RA specialist nurse to call back.
I also ask myself if anything I did triggered it.
Reading in bed sets it off, and also makes my hands worse.
Anyway, good you posted. Wishing you well for answers and appropriate action.
Hi, I suffered terrible headaches while on Methotrexate, I took that many painkillers, used to wake up about 4am with horrid head. Came off Methotrexate 4 months ago due to constant infections. Low @nd behold headaches have stopped.
Have you had your neck checked Arlescote? I have disc and bone degeneration in my neck and this causes me pain up the side of my neck and my head, used to cause me very disturbed sleep. I take amitriptyline before bed and have found a supportive pillow that makes it a lot better. It’s not connected to mtx and pred which I took for many years before this happened. As always, as we aren’t medically qualified I’d suggest seeing your GP for investigations or failing that talk to your rheumy nurse. I hope you get sorted soon as disturbed sleep is no fun. Let us know how you get on x
I usually get a bad headache in the lower back of my head the second day of taking my eight tabs. I take Tylenol at bedtime and it dissipates after morning coffee. Not as bad as what you’ve described. But I was woken up two nights ago after taking MTX with a pain in my upper back that felt like I was being punched in the back with a knife. It came and went all night so I went to the doctor who couldn’t see me but her nurse practitioner did. She said it was my RA traveling to my spine. I’m not sure of that. Pain not here now but if it comes back, I’m going to the ER. I do believe that between the MTX and the RA we are destined to suffer many pain insults throughout our bodies - nature of the beast I guess. Hang in there and have a great day today.
