Vicks vapourub for sore skin

I don’t know if anyone else gets sore skin around their finger nails when on steroids. It’s mainly at the sides (not cuticle area). My skin grows thicker and I get tiny what looks like splinters. They eventually surface. I’m forever filing the skin down because it gets sore. In turn the filing probably makes it more sore. I don’t go mad at it though. I know vicks vapourub has loads of uses so thought I’ve got nothing to lose. Slathered it all over my finger nails at bedtime. Hey presto, this morning they are much less sore. I’m doing it again tonight!

Please talk to your health care team about the 'splinter' look - they could be small haemorrhages and can be important.

But I get sore around the nails when I have a flare. I mentioned this in a previous post that it feels as if my nails don't fit any more and lots of people agreed that they got it too.

Hi oldtimer Im glad I saw the post. I have noticed tiny sore cuts at the top of my index finger and thought it was just my new job as I work wirh machinery and us oil. So I have been using barrier cream. Should I inform my rheumy about this as Im on mtx injections now for my RA.

It sounds a bit different from lesions that look like splinters. IF you can relate the injuries that you get to the damage present it sounds as if you are doing the right thing already. But small splinter haemorrhages look different, so always best to show them to a health professional.

Hi there, if you’re talking about splits on the ends of your fingers, and around cuticles, then Vicks Vapor Rub is an old fashioned remedy that we use in Australia. I have no idea why it works, hope yours get better soon, as they are very painful but not life threatening, cheers Deb

I'll have to try that myself. I too get hard skin around my fingers when taking steriods. Thank you
