I seem to have an issue for the past 5 months with coffee tasting like salt or having a metallic taste. Nothing else I eat or drink has this issue so I was wondering if anyone has had this same issue or know of someone that has. They say that when you get older your taste buds change. Yesterday I went for my yearly physical and asked my doctor about it, he said he never heard of it and maybe I should drink tea! I said I do during the afternoon and evenings but I like my coffee in the morning, just one cup.
I have tried 4 different brands of coffee at home and in the restaurants and cleaned my coffee pot with vinegar and flushed the pot with hot water. Still have the same issue even after all of that. : (
Let me know if you have ever heard of this happening to someone and if it ever goes away. Thank you for listening!

Are you taking MTX? I have found that some things don't taste 'right', including coffee. I also found that anything with caffeine increased the nausea so now drink de-caffeinated and it's tolerable.
No I don't take MTX, I haven't had any new meds in the past year added. I don't have nausea when I drink caffeine drinks just the salt or metal taste I might try the de-caf to see if it is any difference. Thanks for responding. Since the Doc doesn't know I can use all the help I can get! : )
My taste buds have changed since I have been unwell with RD.
Amongst other things, I've gone off coffee, strong breakfast tea and alcohol which I used to love !
I didn't like coffee when I was on night duty as a young nurse or when I was pregnant either. Taste buds do change. Medics won't have any answers, they are usually only interested in serious side effects.
It’s weird you should mention Coffee but Last September I had the absolute Mother of all viral infections.
Chest, throat- you name it it was the cold that kept on giving!
Anyway the outcome was I lost my sense of taste and smell pretty much completely and now it drifts in and out like a whisper it’s very upsetting.
However one thing I’ve noticed is that to me coffee and strawberries taste/ smell exactly the same and especially regards coffee more than any other thing. Coffee to me now ( though I still drink it) just tastes utterly bizarre.
I’m on Benepali and Hydroxychloroquine, what do you take?
