I have taken mtx for almost 2 months and have developed a metal taste in my mouth. It also feels like i burned my tongue with something hot. Has anyone else with RA experienced this side effect from mtx?
Metal taste: I have taken mtx for almost 2 months and... - NRAS
Metal taste
Yes. The third time I was put back on it my mouth was really sore, exactly as you describe. The nurse suggested taking additional folic acid tablets which I did. But still had to come off the metho when my liver functions rocketed along with breathlessness and dizziness.
Yes I did, and eventually got mtx by injection which helped. Ring the Rheumy helpline as Tuttlebees says they might want you to increase your folic acid .
I have always described it as a chemical taste, but I guess we could be describing the same thing. I have also developed a great aversion to many chemical smells, especially anything anti-bacterial, like soap.
I had this with sour milk added into the mix and lost my sense of smell and taste too. Came off it after 18 months (oral and injectable) and sense of taste and smell now fully recovered.
You say you came off it? Were you put on something else instead? (I'm on injectable).
I came down to a dose of injectable MTX I could tolerate (ie no foul taste or nausea) but unfortunately other symptoms started up and my GPs agreed I should come off it and see if everything cleared up. However it takes a long time to be fully clear of MTX (up to six months) so I took nothing until I had to have steroids and restarted Hydroxy a month ago. I have other things going on but little joint pain at present. My liver was usually a bit raised or worse on MTX so no regrets.
I have to say the foul taste I experienced wasn't just metalic and it would last 24/7. It is listed as a very rare side effect of MTX. The injections helped a lot but finally it came back with them too. Hope this helps. RArebird
Yes I have been having the same thing. At first I thought that I was getting it from my forks but I wasn't biting the fork, so how could that be it? It goes away and then comes back for a day or two. I never thought about the methotrexate being the cause because I had already been on it for a year.
Hello
Sorry to say it is the yes, most probably they may change to injections or a new DMARD. They also increase your Folic Acid dose.
Generally I would discuss all of this with the Rhumi Nurse
All the best
