I had ankle fusion nearly a year ago after being told it's a fantastic operation 90% success rate Sadly after 6 months Consultant said bones had not fused. Did I smoke, was I diabetic or have osetoperosis or was I over weight?NO to all. So I am having further ankle fusion operation soon using the same method. So worried it will not work the second time and dreading the weeks/months of non weight bearing . Has anyone had similar experience?

Non union ankle fusion
Sorry to hear this. The foot surgeon I saw refused to operate on me, saying I was too young (52 then) and in any case an ankle fusion wouldn't give me the results I wanted (he hadn't asked what I wanted!) and he would only consider an ankle replacement but, as they only last 10 years, I was far too young, despite x rays and MRI showing extensive joint damage (dx 1971) and being in pain. I do wonder whether he didn't want the job, despite being called the top foot surgeon in my area, as he knew it would be difficult.
I haven't had experience of this myself but have come across ortho surgeons and nurses who believe that non union of fracture sites and/or fusions may have a link to NSAID use. Its late so I'm sorry but I can't dig any research up right now but I know it has been an issue raised amongst orthopedic views for several years. But just as one specialist has their opinion, another will have another opinion. Food for thought though?
