There’s a few men on here Benny welcome to the forum 👍

You must read names differently to me. I think that there are a lot of us. I await to be corrected if necessary.

We do have a few considering the percentage difference in women to men who have RD. I think also men generally, it's only generally mind, don't tend to 'talk' about things concerning their health. Those we do have are fine men who will no doubt reply if they're around.

Welcome by the way!

There are a few of us around, welcome aboard!

I think, as nomoreheels says, we men are less inclined to talk about our health (not me 😀) and there are fewer men with RA so overall I’ve always thought the balance on here was reasonably representative.

Maybe it’s just that women talk more than men... 🤣

That’s me out of here.

Can't say that I'm very fond of talking about my health (gasps of surprise from many members) :-O :-) but there are times when a man's gotta do what a man's gotta do! ;-)

Welcome aboard Mr_Judge_Benny_Hinn.

Wishbone - long time no hear! 😂

wishbone in reply toShalf

Been out for a very unhealthy meal with my mate. Also had a pint of Guinness which was rather nice as I rarely drink alcohol these days. :-)

Shalf profile image
Shalf in reply towishbone

Isn't a pint of Guinness a meal anyway? One of my many ex's haha used to drink Guinness all the time. My god! His belly!!! Well on our adventures up top of Scotland became a Guinness and fresh trout tour! Then they introduced Gillespie's . Another fine ale but did it pack the weight on!! Good times though! Fiddler's, guitarists at night under the braw bricht moonlich night!! Just thinking! Guinness is full of good things! Must try again! 😜

wishbone in reply toShalf

Very true!..and I did indeed fail to empty the glass by a mouthful or two. Sadly I am no longer the man I once was! :-(

Shalf profile image
Shalf in reply towishbone

Wishbone - You can take the man away from the bar but you can't take the bar away from the man! 😉

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toShalf

After hearing that I feel like a new man! Thanks a billion Suzie! :-)

Sorry men! but this is why I prefer talking to females about my health problems, and my insecurities like the one above! :-O I also prefer being seen by female doctors and nurses. Alas, as luck would have it my urologist is a male! :-(

Shalf profile image
Shalf in reply towishbone

It really doesn't have to be as tough for men as some think it is. Most women are very receptive and actually like men who can openly express. It's a strength not a weakness as some think!

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toShalf

Although the above was the Guinness talking, ;-) I do in all seriousness and for whatever reasons, feel more comfortable talking to women about my health problems rather than men. Same goes for doctors and nurses too. I'm better now but used to find it difficult talking about my health, not only on this forum, but with my doctors as well. I was probably worse than most men when it came to doctors appointments. My wife used to play merry hell with me for not asking the doctor about this or not telling him about that. I was a right one for down playing things too, and for sticking my head in the sand...hear no evil think no evil sort of dangerous behaviour! :-( I've reformed a lot since joining this forum nearly 4 years ago. My GP was aghast when I pulled out my reminder list of things to ask him the other day and told him he was in for a right grilling, but he did manage to raise a smile when he found out that I only had 4 questions wrote down. :-)

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toShalf

Sounds like you had good times back then Suzie, especially with all them ex's! ;-) Not sure about the Guinness and fresh trout tour though! Does that mean you both had a belly full of Guinness then went fishing for trout in a nearby burn, or, that you dined on a meal of fresh trout & chips while consuming copious amounts of Guiness?? The latter being far more up my street! :-)

Shalf profile image
Shalf in reply towishbone

No! We fished in the lochs first! I hated it Wishbone ☹️ He gave me this stupid net thing to put over my head and a Kwik fit like Mr blobby suit that was 10 times too big for me! I liked the guy but c'mon! 😨

I was 32 at the time. I was blonde, slim, good looking and I was getting mauled by midges for what!! Jumping trout!! I'm a Scottish girl but my dream of up north was romantic!! Hotel with real burning stove, a wee whiskey or three and a four poster bed after a slap up posh meal!! Not a bloody crappy tent in a sheep pend ,freezing! With a trout that looked like it was still alive! And a half can of carlsberg till Monday!! This was Saturday lol. Oh my god! Ex man - bloody right! Hahaha

I do wonder the trigger of my RA 🤔

Could have well been numerous reasons 😂. Crazy life looking for peace and romance LOL

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toShalf

Very romantic! :-) At least he was considerate enough to kit you out with a face net and and that Mr blobby suit! You must have looked very becoming. lol :-)

Back in the sixties I spent a few months as a sweet innocent 16 year old lad working in the whiskey distilleries on Islay. Goes without saying that place was awash with illegal whiskey...raw unblended stuff that the workers smuggled out of the distilleries. God was it powerful!!! :-O It tasted terrible too!! Fun times though! :-)

We are here, with 4 times as many women getting RD so they will post more often than men.

I have found that men tend not to want to share and rather they just get on with it. I know this from a few men who I have had messages from (talking about certain aspects of RA) and also, as stated above, 3 times as many women have RA than men.

I just read this which is interesting.

Then how about starting a new post, introduce yourself with a brief history of your condition maybe. Could be those men you're wanting to converse with or who haven't responded will?

Too many tins of that bloody Fosters rubbish again Chongo? :-O :-)

They don’t sell fosters in Australia. They have more sense than drink that fizzy rubbish. They export it for dozy Brits to drink🙄😂

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply todtech

I was just kidding with him....Chongo let me know that Fosters was rubbish in a previous post. :-)

Chongo profile image
Chongo in reply todtech

In my local pub they had a 6 pack of Fosters sitting in the fridge gathering dust for ages, so l tried one for a kak, and it was surprisingly drinkable. (I may have been a bit under the influence at the time)

I used to drink Melbourne Bitter by the truckload, but the hangovers were getting torturous...So now I've discovered 'Great Northern', a nice mid strength drop from Queensland and it's the grouse!

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toChongo

Chongo, you seem to be under the influence most of the time! :-O Typical bloody ozzie I suppose! ;-)

You need to visit Pomgolia mate and try some proper brews. :-O

I think 'kak' means something slightly different in Pomgolia to what it does in Oz. :-)

Chongo profile image
Chongo in reply towishbone

Hah hah! I tried a can of Fosters a few weeks ago just for a laugh...It actually wasn't too bad and l quite liked it for a bit of a change...(Plus l was a bit slathered)

BUT DON'T TELL ANYONE, FOR CHRISTSAKE !!

My mates would rip my ears off and launch me to sea towards Pomgolia in a leaky old boat if they ever found out! ☺

I am on here, but mostly lurk, mainly because my single swollen figure, stiff hands in the morning, occasional aching limbs and clinical results dont warrant a diagnosis.

Also at the moment also I find I can avoid flare-ups by avoiding certain foods (containing eggs, oats and wheat - which I found out as a result of a blood reaction test).

Also taking a bunch of supplements (CoQ10, Fisetin, Turmeric) , which may or may not help. Also cold showers (after some stationary biking to warm me up) before bed.

wishbone profile image
wishbone in reply toalexask

I also take a few supplements such as manuka honey, gelatine and probiotics. Trouble is there's so many variables with these autoimmune conditions that it's difficult to know for sure if they are doing any good, but I continue with them just in case they are.

Hope your condition doesn't develop into something more serious.

Oh, and you can keep your cold showers...brrrrr! :-)

Welcome, mate....Ya got a mad Aussie on board here as well as a fair few other blokes.

I don't talk much, but if l need any info on my mongrel condition all l have to do is ask the great people here...They are a wealth of information, so l reckon this is the best forum on Auto Immune disorders that I have found since being diagnosed with R/A about 6 months ago. I've also got Cervical and Lumbar spinal issues and bilateral torn rotator cuffs which I've had for many years and been under the knife a few times.

So any questions, just ask........Cheers!

I know what you mean, but sometimes there are things that men may have more experience of, and also the other way around. No point asking me about how methotrexate affects the menopause, for example.

Can’t really think of that many physical aspects of RA that are specific to men (but must be some), but emotionally it can be useful to hear another person of the same gender’s opinion or experiences as there are aspects of all conditions that, dare I say it, affect men and women differently. The (outdated but still there) ‘expectation’ that a man should provide for his family, for example, may mean that having to give up work affects a man differently than a woman. And before I get flak I am not saying that this is the way the world should be, just that men and women have different cultural expectations places on them that are equally as important — but different.

As I look after my children, for example, I sometimes find that it is a female opinion that is most closely aligned with my own, because despite it being 2019 there still aren’t that many of us. And as for men with RA who also look after their children full -time — I don’t think I’ve ever met or spoken to one. So I can see that sometimes one may look for advice from specific genders (although if there are any full-time child-carers who also happen to be male — 👋).

All the best.

Except for alexask and that mad ozzie Chongo, who lives in country with a dreadful climate, so must surly have a lot more wrong with him than what he's letting on. ;-) Otherwise there doesn't appear to be any other men willing to say much about their health.

Benny I am definitely a man with RA, but I am lucky, as are most men with RA it doesn't effect us or as bad as it does ladies, this is a good thing of course.
