Hi! Has anyone had an injection into their knee? If so, how was it and were there any side effects etc?

Thanks 😊

Thanks! Good to know. I’m seeing my rheumatologist tomorrow and I currently don’t take any dmards as I have awful side effects so I’m thinking she may offer me injections? What do you take for your RA?

Yes I had an injection into my. Left knee and it's helped me quite a lot.. When you first get it done you wonder if it's going to work but after about five days I noticed quite a difference.

Ooh that sounds promising! I’m hoping that’s what I’ll be offered as I can’t/won’t take dmards. I’ll keep you posted 😊

Hi Sj

Yes I have, several times! I’m not going to lie it’s a bit uncomfortable if they go behind the knee cap and it’s really important to stay still and not clamp your knee down. With me they usually drain the fluid first then inject the steroid in. It’s important to go home and rest your leg and not move around to let the steroid stay in the joint. The best news for me is they work brilliantly! I feel like I have a new knee the next day! The swelling has reduced and I have so much more movement. I hope the same happens for you and the info has helped. Sarah xx

Sounds good, I do obviously expect some discomfort. I’ve had injections in my shoulders before and didn’t feel a thing. I’ll wait and see.....

Out of interest, are you on any other treatment? S

Hi yes I’m on Azathioprine and just started Baricitinib a week ago. I can’t tolerate any other DMARDs and failed a few biologics. I wasn’t on either when I had knee injections though so was definitely the steroid that worked. I’ve had my shoulders done, it’s a bit more of a raw pain in the knee if that makes sense. xx

Yes I have had 4 into right knee and 2 into left. Out of the six 5 have worked really well and I think the 1 that didnt is because I only rested for a few hours. With all the others I rested 2 to 3 days. The longer I rested the better the result. It was painfull in varying degrees but the benifits out weigh the pain by far. All the best for tomorrow.

Hi..

Id had 8 months of discomfort and pain...and despite being funny about needles..i had an injection in my knee at beginning of December.

It felt a little bit funny that evening...but crikey, within a couple of days I felt great. I felt young and fit again. Totally transformative

. Good luck with it.

That sounds great! Did you rest for a couple of days afterwards? I’m a bit concerned as I look after my granddaughter on tues/wed and can’t cancel at such short notice 😳

I did take it easy for that evening and next morning but that was just me being overcautious.. i think. I d never had anything like this before and would have been apprehensive if I d known in advance. My consultant did it... he froze the area first with a gel.. and the scratch was no worse than for a routine blood test.

But.. i cant stress how great I felt by a week later. Just to be able to walk normally with no discomfort.

Hope it goes well.

Just had my left knee injected AMAZING instant result. I've had pain in my joints for years and usually have an all over injection with poor results so I opted for joint injections instead, it doesn't always work but had a great result into my knee. I got about a weeks worth of pain relief before mild pain returned but I kept that at bay with ibuprofen. Different people have different results five it a go.

Yes I’ve had it done 3 times... funnily enough about 4 -5 years BEFORE my RA diagnosis, as I kept getting knee pain swelling etc and psoriatic arthritis was mentioned but never tested for anything...

Thoughts of it were worse than the procedure and they drew fluid from my knee too which gave such instant relief, then you have to rest it as much as possible for a day or two to ensure the steroid stays where it is rather than disperse elsewhere, it took the pain away for months and months and After the third it hasn’t “touch wood” come back like that, I get niggles in my knees but nothing like what I had back then. Hope it works for you too! All the best! X

Hi Sjhoney

I had an injection into my knee. I’d been in so much pain, firstly - RA/Osteo, secondly - I fell twice onto my worst knee & thirdly, our Labradoodle sideswiped me. I had a scan, then an arthroscopy to clear out the debris. After a few weeks I had a cortisone with anaesthetic injected into the joint to tide me over for a while whilst waiting for a total knee replacement. All I remember is being so relieved. It didn’t bother me at all. You’ve probably had it done by now so I hope you were as lucky as I was. Nic xx

Good Afternoon,

Yes I ve had quite a number of cortizone injections in both knees, no side effects which is good, I find them a great relief, they last around 6 months for me, then the pain comes back. I use Volarol gel everyday on my knees and anything that hurts.

I had the best injection from a surgeon, I need 2 knee replacements, just buying time. He gave the most accurate injections. Note, you may experience a bit of boosted mood as the drug leaks into your system. Mentally I felt happier than I have in a yr, lol.
