I'm fit, healthy, look after my diet, don't smoke however I do like one glass of red wine in the evening! With meds will this vice be a thing of the past?

Ra meds are hard on the liver. The recommendations on how much alcohol you should consume varies.Ofcourse you need to always judge the situation from your situation. How well your liver is doing? How meds effect it. Age is also a factor to consider. Small amounts of alcohol is usually thought to be ok.😊

I think depends on what meds your on. I can’t take painkillers & have tried CBD oil but neither are good for me, so it’s a glass of red 🍷 for me of an evening. I only take hydroxychoroquine so it isn’t a problem. I have tried cutting it out completely & trying different diets but for me it didn’t make a scrap of difference but we’re all different.

A big hefty no as long as you only have one glass unless you have been told by your rheumy not to drink at all.xxx

If you’re not on meds that effect your liver, my opinion is definitely don’t give up 1 glass of red wine. We have to sacrifice a lot with this disease. xxx

When I first started drugs, esp MTX, I stopped drinking alcohol for the first two months to give my body the best chance possible of dealing with the drugs and for them to work. After that I slowly added the occassional glass into my diet, makimg sure that my blood test results didn't change. They didn't so now I have a drink maybe 3 or 4 nights a week with dinner.

Whatever you do, don't drink lots in one day. But otherwise discuss with your rheumy when you know what drugs you'll be offered, amd you'll probably be advised that it's ok in moderation.

Here's the NRAS guidance

Depends what you're on and what your liver function is like. If you're getting monthly blood tests then you can see what it's doing. When I first started methotrexate I was warned to stay off alcohol, even in small doses, so my body got used to the drug. But now I've been on it for a year, I allow myself anything, in moderation. Having the occasional glass of wine (maybe not every night) is fine I think. But always best to ask your specialist, who knows exactly what you're on and how you are coping with it.

Red wine is the only drink I enjoy. I have been on different meds over 3 years and no liver problems or any other issues related to alcohol. Red wine is a good choice if you want to drink as it has antioxidants and other health benefits. It's one of my 5 a day! 🍇 😄 Best to check with GP and Rheumy. If ok, drink sensibly and have a day or two without. Xx

The lovely rheumy nurse said to keep within national guidelines of 14 units a week. However, I stick to a single unit of wine or beer and not every day. Liver values have never been affected I'm just super cautious.

I'd be surprised if one glass of red wine per night would do you any harm, though much depends on the size of the glass I suppose! ;-) Seriously though, I would think it depends on what meds they put you on so best ask your rheumatologist.

Don't want to be a bad influence here and in no way am I suggesting that it's ok for folks to do likewise, but I must confess to being a regular, if only a moderate drinker of cider and red wine :-O hic! throughout the 8 years I was taking methotrexate. There were never any issues with my monthly liver markers during that time, which hopefully still holds good to this day. I stopped drinking several years ago, not because of any health issues, but I simply lost the taste for alcohol and most of the fun wen't out of it as well. Must admit that I've been a thoroughly miserable sod ever since! :-( My wife still loves me though! :-)

Depends on the meds. I have Fibromyalgia, as well, and some of those meds make one glass of wine become seven glasses, so not right for me. Also, in general, alcohol Is an inflammatory so not a good thing for any health issues dealing with inflammation. Moderation, perhaps? Or, just switch to street drugs... lol

I am very sensitive to alcohol these days so I'm happy with a couple of glasses of white wine maybe every month. I feel like you say that some meds make one glass seem like seven. Ha ha .. I think I'll pass on the street drugs! Think I am on enough loopy stuff on prescription! Reminds me of when my Mum was on the phone to my auntie a few years back when I had gone to study at college for my BA Fine Art and I had also changed my RA meds. Mum said .. Julie is fine .. She's at art college and taking a lot of drugs! 😱😜. I spoke to my aunt to let her know they were prescribed for my RA and not popping any psychedelic pills to enhance my mind to paint some crazy art!!

A girl after my own heart ! 🍷 When I was on MTX because of the warning I stopped for a while and introduced a small glass slowly. I did continue with my daily glass (small one) in the evening .. even my GP said there’s no reason to go teetotal unless there’s a problem... but now I’m off the MTX only because i couldn’t get on with it (after giving it 4 years!).

I’m now on Rituximab infusions So obviously still enjoy my wine just a small amount most evenings with dinner. As long as you don’t overdo it and as someone else said ..binge drinking is the worst I believe... hell we have to have something to help us live through this disease. Why not enjoy the odd tipple...?! Chin chin! TT Xx

I was an avid wine drinker, attended a wine club, had a lovely collection of wine under the stairs (!) Then I wasn't enjoying my wine so much, then I got very fatigued , then a sore foot, then very unwell, then diagnosed with RD.

Now I cannot tolerate any alcohol at all. Tried a wee snifter on Christmas day and couldn't even manage the first sip. It is very , very strange.

My friends and family are benefiting from getting very nice bottles for birthday and Christmas gifts !

I was advised by my Rheumy to not have more than one bottle of wine per week, that went a bit awry at Christmas, but back to it now.

I was told I was likely too live 2.6 years 7 years ago due too ra/ild ive had no meds other than steroids but have cannabis and it certainly reduces swelling

Is that the legal CBD oil or the proper stuff with THC? If the latter then I presume you don't smoke it? Glad you're still here despite the ILD. I think it's pretty much down to the luck of the draw how long someone survives with that thing.

philvaughan profile image

the real stuff for about 5 years I was really against it (hypocrite)

wishbone profile image

Thought as much. Glad it's helping you. I tried the legal oil but it did nothing for me.

I was diagnosed with ILD 3 years ago. My chest consultant said it was caused by my RA and not meds, due to inflammation getting into my lungs from what I can gather. I did see your post about ILD and thought about replying but I'm a bit of a coward to be honest and prefer not to talk about it in detail if I can avoid it. My way of dealing with it is like what many of us do I suppose, by trying not to think about it and keeping it tucked away in the back of my mind, as difficult as that is. I also keep all of my fingers & toes crossed of course. :-)

Take care and good luck to you.

I tried oil but it wasn't as good and I didn't like the taste the real stuff works well for me . im currently homeless and live in a hostel and been arguing with the council for five months I think that's what keeps me going. my diagnosis was ra/ild probable other joke really im 7 years on

Hi, read your post, it may be best if you take your meds with water, wait a while then have your glass of red wine or have your red wine before you take the meds but leave a gap. Many of the information leaflets tell you probably do not drink any thing other than water but I am sure one glass per day won't hurt you, a bottle maybe a different outcome. My own tipple is white wine which I keep to a fairly strict intake (don't get smashed even during the festive season) Hopefully it needn't be a thing of the past except if you into hospital where the smallest of booze is not allowed.

Keep it moderate.
