Are there any crocheters on here? I find crochet really relaxing but am finding it harder on my hands now, any one have any experience or tips to help?
Crochet!: Are there any crocheters on here? I find... - NRAS
Crochet!
I don't have any tips, just wanted to say I think anyone who can crocheter and knit I think is clever, its lovely to see hand knit and crocheter items, something that's getting lost
Thanks, I love doing it and will be gutted if I cant! I also like to do tapestry and embroidery!
very clever west80, you might not be able today but tomorrow might feel different xx
I crochet - I had to stop for a while last year around diagnosis time, but I’ve since had medication twiddled and now thankfully seem stable for now.
If you haven’t already got ergonomic hooks I’d recommend Clover ones.
Last year I asked my physio how I could back to doing crochet, she suggested I treat it like training for a marathon. She reasoned that an athlete wouldn’t go straight back to running full distance after an injury, so it’s the same for us. (This didn’t seem obvious to me until she made the comparison)
So, I started to slowly build up strength and stamina in my hands. 1st session of 5 min, if that felt ok the next morning, I increased it slightly. Not forgetting to add rest days.
I can tolerate up to 3 hrs again as long as I stretch my fingers out periodically, and don’t hold my hands rigid, distracted by the tv.
Thanks, not had diagnosis yet still waiting for my appointment, so just on painkillers at the mo! The marathon thing is great advice though as not thought About that! Will also look at the ergonomic hooks 😁 thanks everyone!
Not tried that, thanks will give it ago x
used to sew, knit and crochet, so feel 4u. sadly not poss now - evenreduced to 1 finger typing [and in support gluvs isotherm] x
What a good analogy! I knit and crochet but this time 2 years ago I thought it would never be possible again. I've got comfort hooks with a rubbery grip (can't remember the brand) which are kinder to the fingers but it's my wrists that tend to protest. So, as Lilwasp says, get into training. It worked for me.
I choose patterns that call for the bigger hooks and I have a hook holder shaped like a pear that helps with the smaller hooks. I also only do it for a short intervals. Frustrating when you want to get a project done, but it’s getting harder to do at all’s o it’s better than nothing.
Spoz I had got used to be able to sit all day (if and when I get the time) but will just have to pace myself!! Loving the 5d diamond painting kits at the mo as theres no pressure on my hands!!
Bamboo crochet hooks are helpful, I also have added those rubber like sleeves to my hooks and that has helped a lot. The hooks I bought and liked best have bamboo handles but are metal hooks. I just can’t remember the brand. 🙄 But it all depends on the day whether I can crochet. I bought them at JoAnns.com. Hope this helps!
I knit and crochet. At the moment I am crocheting hexagons for a throw. I can’t do it for any length of time because of the pains in my hands. I use an ergonomic crochet hook which makes it slightly less painful.
