Osteoporosis medicine questions

I have both RA and osteoporosis. I just had a bone density test and it was not good. Doc wants me to start Prolio. Lots of potential bad side effects. Has anyone taken this drug. Thanks so much.

I also have RA and was diagnosed with osteoporosis following a fracture in Dec 2014. I tried 2 bisphosphonates unsuccessfully and started on Prolia (Denosumab) 2 and a half years ago. It is an injection administered very 6 months and is a godsend to me. I have no ill effects from it and, having been re scanned after 2 years of being on the drug, my bone density has increased by over 12% which has pleased my rheumatologist! All drugs have potential side effects but not everyone gets them so, based on my experiences, I'd say try to be positive and go for it. You might be like me. Good luck. Linda

Thanks so much for your reply. If you don't mind my asking, where was your fracture and did the Prolia help to heal?

I broke my shoulder, the left humeral head in 2 places. The fracture and rehabilitation took about a year. I had no idea it would take so long and I still have problems. I would think the Prolia started to help but cannot say for sure not being a medic. I just did as I was told in order to get better as I was told my bones were in a very bad way. As I said before it is having the desired effect so I'm more than happy to have it. Good luck x

Sounds nasty. Hope your problems will go away with your shoulder. Thanks for responding so quickly.

Can any of you with osteoporosis and RA tell me about what medicare will pay on the Prolia injections. I have read and some indicate that Medicare Part B pays some but I thought I had to go through my Part D. I would appreciate any info as am going to the doctor in a couple of weeks and know I should be on them but called a couple of years ago and medicare didn't seem to pay much on them..

I am in the UK & my GP practice agreed to fund my Prolia. Sorry I've not heard of Medicare.
