Hi All. Can anyone recommend a really good consultant rheumatologist in Scotland? And by good I partly mean someone who is respectful of a thinking/questioning patient! Many thanks.

Good consultant rheumatologist in Scotland?
Are you looking for a private rheumatologist and if so what part of Scotland? There aren’t that many private rheumatologists in Scotland as far as I’m aware - but I think there’s quite a good woman in Fife who sees private patients at the Spire hospital in Edinburgh so I’ve heard. The best Scottish rheumatologists I know of only take NHS patients.
If you are looking for an NHS rheumatologist and you have RA then I think it’s usually just a case of the luck of the draw.
I did relocate and asked my first rheumatologist to refer me to one who had been recommended to me. He turned out to be very pedantic and rigid about diagnostic criteria - and he therefore missed some important details that later got me rediagnosed correctly somewhere else.
Thanks very much for that helpful info. It will have to be private as it's for my daughter who is currently living abroad. We're on the east side of the country but would travel just about anywhere to be seen by someone with a good reputation. She's not got medical insurance so don't want to spend quite a lot only to be told what we already know.
Hi Tavvy all depends we're you live as too whom you my get, I'm under a Dr Harvie at Raigmore Hospital in Inverness but if stayed a few miles east I would have been under Dr Grays hospital in Elgin don't know who the Rheumatologist is there if any. Ask your GP when they refer you again if coming into another Health boards area. I had to be rereffered for my biologic Enbrel because I had moved different address from Western isles health board to Highlands health board took a while sorting out but in the long run I stayed with same Rheumatologist so I hope you and you GP can sort one out for you.
Hi there. Thanks for your reply. I should have said in my orignal post that I was asking on behalf of my daughter who is currently living abroad so apparently we have to go private to get a second opinion when she comes back later this year.
Tavvy, you might struggle to find someone noteworthy in Scotland, some but not all NHS rheumatologists do private work. As already said in previous posts the Spire private hospital in Edinburgh offer a service, but none of the rheumatologists come highly recommended. Glasgow also has a private rheumatology clinic with variable ratings.
Hi there. Thanks for your reply. I did look at The Spire hospital and there were 3 rheumatoligists on offer but not knowing anything about any of them it's hard to choose. The impression I'm getting is that all the best people only work for the NHS - which is great really! I'm usually against private medicine but when one of your kids isn't getting the care they need in another country politics go to the wind (in my case!)
There are a lot of rheumatologists mentioned on a previous post that you could check out --'Scotland Rheumatologist'.
Thanks so much for that - lots of helpful posts still up there.
I saw this consultant in Glasgow to get a fast track diagnosis (we knew what was wrong but GP isn't able to start treatment in Scotland without consultant confirmation & presciption). He was recommended to me by my son & daughter in law (both medics who had worked with him in NHS)

I couldn't remember his name and I found him using the search facility. Might suit you better if you're not too close to Glasgow.

Good luck!
If it is a NHS consultant then Dr Susie Silburn NHS Tayside is excellent. I cannot praise her enough, she was the one who diagnosed me correctly after many years of not getting anywhere and lots of pain. Very good at her job, listens and understands. But unsure if she would do private work
Thanks so much for that - I'll try to fnd her. Hi
Does Dr Silburn rely heavily on positive bloods and scans do you know? I need a second opinion
