Hi all, anyone had a bakers cyst - I've had severe pain in the back of my knee and calf for over a week. GP thought it was a dvt so spent most of yesterday at hospital getting tested and scanned. They finally told me it was big bakers cyst behind the knee that had burst. I'm grateful it wasn't a dvt but this thing is really painful and the only advice they gave me is take more pain killers!
Bakers Cyst?: Hi all, anyone had a bakers cyst - I've... - NRAS
Bakers Cyst?
Oh poor you. Yes I had a them all the time after a bilateral knee replacement. Same thing happened to me...was rushed into hospital with suspected dvt. I had spectacular bruising all up the back of leg. My knee used to lock and it was agony. Always better when it bursts though.
Mine seem to have just cleared up. But I would recommend gentle knee exercises. I use a stationary bike, and swimming. Plus exercises from physio.

Yes , I had one yrs ago and did the same thing spent time at hospital. I had another and it burst and it was very painful and I rubbed it and had a bruise all down my leg( several inches) towards the calf and all under the knee. |It looked a mess. The other day at GP and mentioned the pain behind the knee and she said take pain tablets.
Sending hugs
Chris
Thanks for the response Chris. I'm not a wimp when it comes to pain but this is a nightmare, as soon as I bend my knee I'm in agony. I'm only comfortable when lying down or with my leg raised. How long did it take to clear up ( if it has)?
It was quite a while ago now that the same thing happened to me - possibility of DVT which turned out to be a Baker's Cyst. My knee was drained in Rheumatology and I was given a depo injection that worked really well. Jude
Thanks Jude, I might ring the rheu y today to see if they can do anything.
Hi Maggsie, it’s worth giving Rheumatology a call to see what they would advise. It’s so painful, but eases when it ruptures.
I was told to raise my leg when sitting and in bed to help it drain as my ankle had swollen with the fluid from my cyst ☹️
I used a compression bandage and a cold compress on the days I could hardly move it.
I was eventually offered surgery to repair the knee joint but by this time the cyst had drained and allowed me more movement, so I declined the procedure.
I hope you get some relief and some good advice, keep pushing the health professionals until you do.
