RA and HRT

Hi, is anyone here on HRT as well as meds for RA? I get rotten psychological side effects from the dmards that I’ve tried and I’m trying to work out if this is connected to menopause? I’m wondering whether I should try HRT for the symptoms that I feel may be connected to menopause? I feel very confused and frustrated at the moment. Any advice would be most welcome 👍

A subject that does come up from time to time - especially given there are so many of us menopausal women on here!

Have a look at some previous posts, like here

Or use search box top right. It's also worth remembering that starting something doesn't mean you have to continue with it....

I've certainly been happy to be on HRT, although now trying to come off it.

Thanks! I’ll have a look. I feel as if I’m clutching at straws a little bit I just need some respite from the general yuckyness of it all 😩😊

Hi, I’ve been on HRT patches for years. I’ve had RA for 4 years and feel the HRT makes me feel better and I’ve seen some research which suggests it’s goood for RA as it keep bones strong. My doctor is a bit reluctant to keep prescribing as we all know it’s not recommended for long term but I’ve had it for 20 years. I feel the risks are minimal and the benefits worth it.

Hi, are you on any RA meds at all? At the moment I’m on 4mg steroids and naproxen when I need it.

Yes, I’m on methotrexate, folic acid, brufen retard and omeprazole.

Yes I'm on hrt patches and have mxt by injection. My gp wasn't initially too keen on me being on hrt for a long time but has accepted it as I had a full hysterectomy some years ago and my mother had osteoporosis so I could be prone to it. Having nursed her through it I would wish it on anybody. As you have enough to cope with ra you don't need hot flushes etc as well. Hope this helps.

Thank you! I think I’ll be hot footing it to the surgery this week! I was offered it about 2 yrs ago but wasn’t sure, then asked for it about a year ago and was refused! By a young, male dr I hasten to add 🙄. I just felt I need a break from all my travails 😩 xx

Hi, Ive been on HRT for more years than I've had RA (10), just thinking about coming off it now, but I've always done really well on it. The doc has tried to get me off HRT slowly, but I always felt so truly awful that I've gone back on. I've now cut down from one every other day to one every 2 days and that seems to be working well for me, so I think I might well be through the menopause and can come off it completely soon. The rheumy consult has never been bothered whether I am on HRT or not. Good luck and may the flushes be a bad memory soon!
