Oysters : Hi guys daft question hi am on Tocilizumab... - NRAS
Oysters
Personally I loathe oysters so wouldn't go near them. And absolutely not if you are not 100% sure about the hygiene standards of the place that is serving them - so avoid oysters hanging around on open buffets.
Beyond that there seems to be a range of advice from avoid anything at all risky (soft cheese, oysters whatever) to my rheumatologist's view that there is no need to restrict yourself and laughed hugely when I asked if I should avoid unpasteurised cheese. So to me it's whether you're in reasonable overall health so for you the pleasure of an oyster is worth the risk......
Last year my OH had oysters at new year - very traditional in France - and got a foul norovirus from them. Which he then gave to me. So actually made no difference that I avoid them!
I was advised by the healthcare at home nurse yesterday to avoid raw fish, meat and eggs.
Also any UN pasteurised food, which includes certain cheese.
They go to nhs choice for pregnancy and follow this.
It is amazing the difference between countries in this. I had believed this too as had read it in England, but have now moved to France. When I asked my new rheumy about this she just laughed - and went off to tell her colleagues about the mad ideas the English have!
Obviously if you are generally in poor health, or have other medical conditions or similar then you have to take more care to avoid food poisoning and so on.But I am basically healthy so I just take normal precautions like washing hands and avoiding badly prepared and handled food.
Possibly not as eaten raw. Personally not something I would eat. Tried it once and never again.
Assuming they'll be raw obviously there'll be higher risk if you have a dicky tum anyhow on TCZ or any of your other meds but otherwise I'd say if it's worth it & you enjoy them go for it, you've to live a little. It's obviously preferable they're served & haven't been hanging around on a buffet but given you can't tell which are ok & which aren't, there's no smell or taste to go off, it's a bit Russian roulette'y anyhow. A little tale... I worked for a brewery promotions company at one time & my MD was each year invited to the local Oyster festival. I always kept his diary free for the following day because you could guarantee he didn't show for work. He always blamed it on the oysters, nothing to do with the fact he was a guest of the sponsors, Guinness, & it flowed freely!
Hey guys thanks for all your replies as far as the toci is concerned it has worked wonders for me if I didn't know better I would say I was cured sadly not as we all know too well.
I love oysters my girlfriend and I would eat them regularly, that was until she decided a person with a disability wasn't for her rotten b**ch.
I think I developed a bowel problem after eating natural yogurt, if I feel unwell I miss my toci until I feel better seems to be the quickest way to pull round during illness..... I'm going for the oysters after checking the place out. You guys are awesome thanks again
Eat enjoy with a nice chilled glass of something white.its a while since I've had oysters I think I'll treat myself,my oyster knife is still in the draw waiting.
Have a good evening.
