bladder problems
Hi, it sounds like you could have a water infection. It may be worth seeing if your GP can test a sample for you to rule it out. I had a very similar problem recently as my ra has been raging since failing Humira. Luckily it seems to be settling down as the prednisolone has helped with inflammation. Are you on weekly blood tests?
hello mogs231
Yes, you are not imagining it methotrexate gave me the same problem with increased urgency and frequency. At one point I needed to go every 10minutes with no ability to hold it, I even bought a radar key to use disabled loos when out. it was found that the methotrexate was causing a minute amount of blood in my urine.
i was seen by a urologist to check there was no other cause for the problem. i was told by the consultant that they see a lot of folk on methotrexate as he put it.
i was told i had an overactive bladder and told to avoid possible triggers: caffeine, carbonated drinks, alcohol, acid fruits, excessive sugar and artifical sweeteners.
I found a website online for bladder calming food which i used as a rough guide to experiment and see what helped? once things had calmed down i was able to reintroduced small quantities of difficult food. i found that mushrooms and scrambled eggs worked well for me along with blueberry drink.

i still take methotrexate but the frequency and urgency issue has improved.
I would definitely mention what you are experiencing to your gp and rheumy department.
I hope you find a solution too.
Best wishes xx
I sympathise, I avoid even simple painkillers like paracetamol because meds irritate my bladder and affect control. The day I inject my Biologic is the worst. I'm post menopause and my Gynae puts it down to a lack of oestrogen so I use cream or pessaries which help. You might be much younger in which case ignore me but you aren't alone reacting this way. I hope you find a way forward. Keep your pelvic floor toned!
Are you on steroids as well? That has an effect on the smooth muscle and can affect your bladder control.
Really, I didn't know that! I've been struggling with urgency too I've been on mtx and steroids for 18months wasn't sure if it was meds or RA at fault.M x

Hello mogs231
Hello mogs231
Yup, I get that too on 12.5mg MTX.....annoying at times but would prefer that
than more pain.
LadyJan
yes thats true....keep persevering!! xx
Hallo Mogs231. I think that alteration in urinating is a Mtx symptom we are supposed to report... Otherwise, best wishes for the journey. We're all on this highway too! Mtx takes three months to kick in, but can be very effective when you get there. Read up, self monitor, use your Rheumatology specialist nurse - she's your best friend now. x
