Advice please! Not allowed Methotrexate...

Hi,

I have PSA. I am on Benepali and have been on mtx, but gradually reducing it from 25 to 5 mg. Each time, even with reductions, my blood count has gone so low that I've had to come off it. My rheumy nurse rang me to say that I'm going to have to come off mtx altogether. I have an appointment to see them next week now. I have a permanent damage in all my joints, but since coming off the mtx the throbbing, stabbing pain of the active disease ( I know you all know it!) I'm worried that without mtx the disease will just keep going... The rheumy told me this last time ie She hoped I could stay on mtx because she said that without it, the disease would ' find a way round' the Benepali. Any one been in the same situation? Obvs not asking for medical advice- just info!

Thank you,

Liz

Hi Lizzie.

I also have PsA and had to come off Methotrexate quite some time ago due to bad reactions.

I am now on my 4th Biologic after failing on various meds. I am currently taking Sulphasalazine with Cosentyx but still no huge improvement unfortunately.

It's always a concern as to what damage is going on when nothings working particularly well.

X

I'm sorry to hear you seem to missing MTX Lizzie, what you describe sounds like disease activity so it appears it was doing something. As I understand it MTX is used alongside anti-TNF's/biologics as it appears they work better with it's support, they seem to become more effective. That said for those who can't take MTX for whatever reason other DMARDs have been used so don't panic, I'm sure your nurse will be able to recommend where you go next. I know it probably feels an age away til you're seen but I wouldn't think much will happen erosion wise in a week. Do you have any NSAIDs prescribed? They may help a little with the inflammation & in turn pain.

Let us know how you get on next week, what's suggested.
