Hair dye: I know this my be a silly question but I am... - NRAS
Hair dye
Always best to check with the professionals but having said that I've had my coloured with all my treatments and long may it continue!
Hello Louis,
I have dyed my hair for as long as I can remember and I'm on MTX, 2nd does was last Thursday and no hair loss so far. Fingers and toes crossed it remains that way.

No problem with colouring my hair, thank goodness. Have been on Mtx for a year and did notice more hair on the brush at first and when it was washed, I have thick hair anyway, so was not a problem. Didn't last too long. Good luck. X
It's been fine for me too thank goodness! I have coloured it regularly and been on mtx almost 4 years. Lost a little hair during first 6 months but it's fine now and has gone wavy which is a bonus. One thing I did do and still do is wash it less often and treat it carefully.
Ask your Rheumy nurse...but modern hair colourants are pretty safe these days.
I think it can be a problem if you have chemotherapy....but I had my hair dyed for 7 years on Mtx, & I still have a full head of hair!
I don't colour mine myself anymore but have spatula gold and blonde highlights at the hairdressers and they actually make my hair a much better condition! He does use some great products. I have never been told to stop doing it even after my Rituximab. Makes me feel and look better. I used to find too that many of the hair semi permanent products you buy have nourishing oils in them and make your hair stronger.
Hi,
I specifically asked my Rheumy if I would be able to continue to dye my hair and he said yes. I've been on methotrexate for 3 weeks now. Unfortunately, I have experienced a significant amount of hair loss, so my hair is looking a little thinner...I can still manage though. Just hope it doesn't get any worse, bc then it may be a little scary.
But I would say just try to baby your hair as much as possible, bc you don't know how it's going to respond to methotrexate in the future. But the fact that it's been good so far is great! So I hope that continues for you.
Plus as a side note, depositing color is much easier than bleaching hair. So if it's just about covering grays..it should definitely be ok 😁

Thanks really helpful advice. I am on a really low dose of mtx at min will be working up to 25 mg so really don't know what will happen when they do that but fingers and toes crossed I don't lose my hair!
