Not just a mobility scooter but a weapon of mass destruction............you ask my husband.

Last week my husband and I went away for a few days.I hadnt been very well for months, and the same 4 walls were getting VERY samey if you know what I mean.

We thought we would go to Weymouth, have been there many times before. We know our way around, its flat to go,out and about with my scooter, and we know which shops and eating places are accessible with the scooter so it meant not having to get to know a place from scratch.

We had good accomodation at the Premier Inn on the seafront, with Brewers Fayre restaurant just across the carpark .We would normally take our own caravan but not for just 5 days. This was ideal.

Weather was terrific, even though we had an abysmal forecast. What could go wrong ?

I have to say I pride myself on my manoeuvring skills on my scooter .I can normally park on a postage stamp. But well I really don't know what happened last week.

Most of the time there wasnt a problem but 2nd day we were there we came out of a sweet shop on the main street,my arm rest was still up,from earlier and it caught a display of toffees.Down came at least a dozen boxes with a clatter. After a lot of apologetic crawling by me,the lady in the shop understood it was an accident, and no permanent damage to the goods.

The following day we went into Dorchester,we were in a charity shop looking at books when I saw one I wanted a closer look at.I reached forward to pick it up but I hadnt turned off the key.I leaned on the handle. It shot forward over my husbands foot and he started shouting in pain as I was on his foot on the scooter.I add at this point I am no Twiggy.

Following that we found a quiet out of the way cafe. They said it was ok to bring my scooter in and showed us to a table easy to negotiate a route to.I cannot walk more than 6 feet so thats why I need my scooter to be near me.We had lunch but in that time a group,of 8 people came in moved 2 or 3 tables together to accomodate their group but made exit for me impossible. Theyre food arrived as we were still eating ,we held on for as long as we could so as not to disturb them, but it got to the point where we had to leave. The cafe proprietor had to ask them to move the tables.I felt bad but they didnt ask to rearrange the tables when they got in there they just assumed it was ok.

Hubby would not let me visit the glass and crockery shop, that day - cant see why.!-- lol

Following day we went to Monkey World,no incidents all day but then we went to the gift shop,on the way out,,hubby turns round from the till to ask for some small change.I move forward to hand it to him and bingo, fingers slip on handle and I shoot forward demolishing a basket of soft toys. The girl on the till did say it was a silly place to put them But I think she just felt sorry for me.

Anyway on our last day we went into Holland &,Barrett in Weymouth. While I was in there a lady came zooming in thru the door on her scooter and completely wiped out a display of plastic bottles of vitamins. The young man in the shop was not happy at all.The lady on the scooter says "ooh sorry its my first day on this I think it may have to go back "At this point I am sat on my scooter looking very sanctimonious with that " I wouldnt do a thing like that " look on my face. If only he knew.

So not very good- must do better !! Hubby says I need to go on one of those retraining courses that bad drivers go on - cheeky devil.!!

.Not sure what happened last week, hubby even says himself what a good driver I am.

But joking apart in the wrong hands these can do some serious damage.

Take care,safe ,happy scootering everyone.

Hey girl don't sweat it 😀I was on the drive , wanted to back my scooter up to the car. This is ok until you get off , try to get it closer it my hand was still on throttle . Result -scooter took off at full speed, daughter shouting "let go mum" scooter rears up an plants two lovely 3 " long scratches on side of car . I've run over Dens feet going thru a doorway, going down a curb, bringing scooter to a stop behind car. His size 8 are now 9.5 I've flattened them so often . 😂😘

Hi Phillylou bet those scratches looked well on the side of the car- ouch !

Poor Den and his feet,It wasnt the first time I Have run over my hubbys feet either ,but it was the first time he screamed in public.

I thought that was funny about increasing his shoe size.

Take care.

Have you thought of attaching some knives to the wheels and changing your name to Boudicca? 😂

Thank you Crusee. That has given me a much needed giggle today. I reckon that, unless my meds start working soon (please) I'll be shopping for a mobility scooter too. I just need to find one I can customise with go-faster stripes, a speedier motor and maybe scythe blades on the axles lol

So glad you enjoyed your break away. A change of scene helps to lift the spirits doesn't it?

Really enjoyed the break away it was well overdue.

Glad it made you giggle Gnarli Hubby is laughing about it now too, even though he didnt at the time.

Having said all that about the scooter I would not be without it.

It has changed things for me greatly. The Difference being sat at home in the house or get out and do things.

I would give it some thought, just hope your meds start to work too.

Take care.

Love your story...I've had the same problem with my scooter. My momma is so happy for us to be able to get out and about that she doesn't mind it when it happens and then like you she feels like she has a new adventure to tell everyone;) I'm glad you got to get out of seeing the same walls for awhile! God Bless - Christy

Hey Crusee - Funny article, although I understand the frustration. I used to take my mother in law to the grocery store and she would get in their carts. I had to walk in front of her backwards to keep her from running over people and aisle displays...

Well Hidden I am blaming the scooter for everything !

I don't usually have this many incidents in a week ,not even in 12 months so not sure what was going on.

I dont have to be led around the supermarket just yet but Tesco have asked me to stop doing wheelies by the deli--- lol !!

Take care.

Hi crusee reading your post made myself and my hubby really laugh as I hired a scooter last year when we went to Tenerife I had never used one before and I don't drive and I can't walk very far with my oa in my spine he kept shouting at me as he said I wasn't watching where I was going there was one night we booked a mobility taxi to take us to the sea front and the driver was getting the ramps and the back ready for the scooter to go in and I drove right up to the ramps scared the driver to death as he was stood at the top of the ramps it really made him jump he thought I was going to drive up the ramps while he was stood there I did laugh as my husband always rode it in to the taxi hope you didn't mind me telling you my experience on a mobility scooter

Dont mind you telling me at all Dotty55 Its good to hear of others adventures .

I hired one in Cyprus 2 years ago.It was a right old boneshaker but I would have been really stuffed without it.It got me from hotel to town and back again, so was able to do some sightseeing and dining out etc.

Always wondered if I could be done for drink driving if I was breathalysed after leaving the restaurant -- lol !

Take care.

I bet you would in England my husband wants to buy one in this country to take on holiday with us he wants to buy a light one I said no because I wouldn't feel safe or confident we brought a light one second hand and I didn't feel confident so we sold it they are so cheap to rent abroad and the taxi drivers don't take care when they put them in the taxis the one we hired in Tenerife the taxi drivers damaged it we rang the company straight away they were just concerned if we could still use it they didn't charge us for the damage so it must happen all the time I bet most of them are refurbished sorry for the long post

Dotty55

OMG I just love your sense of humour! I can just picture you smashing into the stuffed toys as your hubby pretends not to know you lol. Aside from your poor hubby's foot, I'm glad you both can laugh at your driving skills.
