This seems very common amongst all sorts of people, some with nothing else wrong with them at all!
It is most likely to be due to minute flakes of skin over the shins which stick up and trigger the irritation. VERY frequent applications of your favourite cream seems to be the key.
Hello Pitsy. I was interested to read your post about itchy shins. I have GCA and on steroids. I use Hydromol cream, which works for the rest of my body, but not the shins. I scratch so, that I have, in the past, bled, which isn't good when you are on Warfarin, or are prone to leg ulcers. I am going to try the Shea Butter, which stbernhard suggests.ps Had a dreadful time, once, when I changed my washing powder!
Hope you soon sorted
Coconut oil (EV if you can find / afford it) will do pretty well - Apply after a shower - dab the skin semi-dry, apply moderately and let soak in some before you get dressed as it will get oil on your clothes. If there is still a lot of oil, dab again and next time put it on a little lighter. But, I do this every day (I mix mine with EV Olive Oil and Himalayan Bamboo Extra quality fragrance oil (no phathalates, etc.), and it lasts most of the day for itchiness. I put another post on here about making some chickweed oil. That does wonderfully well during the day - search down to my post for information. Good luck there! healthunlocked.com/nras/pos...
I would love to find out myself. I have RA, almost 10 years since diagnosed. I have had Sjogrens for about 2 years. I am insulin dependent with diabetes 2. Diagnosed 20 years ago. It is under control now, I was non compliant for many years.. so the itching really started with the first Sjogrens symptoms. With all the dryness it causes, I was told to use Eucerin to, that it was just dry skin.. it started on my arms and legs.. like no other itch I had ever had. Sudden fierce need to scratch, maddening. I felt so strong of urge to scratch, which I did for monthes. My skin on my arms became thickened and scarred. It would flare, the go away at first. Now I take Hydroxyzine from wake till bed everyday. I wish there was some idea what to do other than scratch. I now sometimes can rub the area and using cool cloth to pat area does help. But who wants to spend all day managing itchiness... I know this is a long post, and any help is appreciated, thanks
Oh, I did quit all fragrance items in washing clothes, soap, etc. Just yesterday I ran out of Eucerin.. I tried EVOO, it works as well as any other that I've tried. But I am beyond the..just dry skin diagnosis. You need to feel it to believe, it doesn't itch all over like dryness. It is a sudden pinpoint feeling, almost like getting a bite... but much, much itchy. Thanks
I've suffered with eczema since birth but when a teenager I realised my eczema was linked to food allergies. My eczema improved but it came back in recent years. I was then diagnosed with diabetes and then thyroid cancer 4 years ago. The eczema came back with a vengance when I was on synthetic levothyroxine and improved when I was started on Armour thyroid. I'm now taking WP thyroid and my eczema is nearly gone. My skin is still itchy and dry but at least it's not like before whereby I was constantly scratching myself red raw and was covered in scaly sores that did not respond to any creams other than steroid creams that are no longer available on the NHS. What I'm trying to say is that maybe it's the levothyroxine or some fillers, binders of colours in it that are triggering a reaction.
Good luck and if you need to PM me please do so and I'll try to help.
I had this problem for years. I ended up being diagnosed with lipodema (NOT lypodema) after my feet and ankles swelled hugely after a short plane trip(!?). I had treatment at a clinic for about 6 months, including wearing Rx compression stockings, and have been well since. No more itchy shins either.......(Another possibility.)
