I am just recovering from a slipped disc and I had pain on both sides at different times. I have been seeing an osteopath who is brilliant. He told me that the pain is transferred and it can be on either side. So the position of the pain is not the problem. He gave me 3 exercises to do but started with one until it improved slightly. First I had to lie on my back with knees bent then pull knees into chest and hold it for however long is comfortable and do this for 5 mins 3 or 4 times a day. When you have improvement with that the second one is to lie on back with knees bent and let them drop to one side and then the other but only as far as is comfortable and do this the same number of times a day, continuing with the first one as well. Then the third one is lying on your back and doing pelvic lifts. I can't really explain this one in words, you need a picture so I would google it. He also told me that standing is as bad as sitting and if you are watching TV you are better to lie on the floor. I am much better now but will continue to do the exercises to hopefully prevent it happening again. My only problem with the first exercise is that my shoulders are now in a rheumatic flare with pulling knees up. If you have shoulder problems try bending knees into chest without using your arms which is what I am doing now. I am obliged to say that doing these exercises is entirely up to you. I am just telling you my experience and I hope it helps. I know some people will say you should go to your GP not an osteopath but in my experience the first option was pointless and the second one worked. Of course osteopaths are private and therefore cost. Mine is £35 a session but you have the exercises now if you choose to do them. Good luck whatever you do.

I would second that I have found osteopaths are very good at this sort of treatment and advice.

Hi, same happened to me when I was 19, I'm now 50 and spent last 4yrs on codeine and morphine . The pain is sometimes excruciating but I had to only do movements that don't agitate it otherwise that's me again for another ??? . Try to be positive & seek advice from your GP.

Regards
