Hay fever and Methotrexate

Had anyone else noticed an improvement in their hay fever whilst on mtx. ?

Last year I had to reduce mtx down to 5mg due to side effects. As usual hay fever full on. Nose and eye spray plus prescription antihistamine .

This year on 25mg injections and the first time in 40 plus years no hay fever. It is wonderful hope it lasts.

Hi moomie,

Could imagine mtx would help since an imunosupressant. Hey fever is an allergic reaction where the immunesystem is activated and mtx is suppressing the reaction like it is suppressing the dysfunctional overactive AI reaction in RA. One pleasant side effect of mtx😊?

Yes that was my thought. It is brilliant though one less annoyance and extra medication to bother with.

I understand!! I had allergies everyday for over 10 years and always had a Claratine and allergy eyedrops with my morning coffee. I haven't needed any allergy meds for over 2 weeks now...guess what?...I enjoy this side effect

It's great isn't it. I have even walked close to the rapeseed which is usually a big culprit.

I was unsure too what to do when I needed the eye drops because I now have to have them for dry eyes / bletharitis. Problem solved. 😀

I’ve only been on Mtx for a few weeks and my hey fever is worse than ever, haven’t had it bad for years now back with a vengeance. Hope it’s nothing else.

Thank you for your post. Have just started on 10 mg methotrexate S.Q. one a week by self injection. Had an absolutely horrible hay fever season, worst ever, in spring of 2019. No relief with anything!!! Specialists were stumped too. Anyone else who thinks that being on methotrexate has helped severe hay fever/seasonal allergies?
