No way I'd risk a general anaesthetic for an injection!

No as much as I'm scared of general anaesthetics. Much safer than they used to be of course, but there's still a risk so I avoid them unless no other option.

I had a cortisone injection into my hip and it was painless.

They don't even give gen anaesthetic for joint replacement so I'd be surprised!

What type of joint replacement? Now you have me worried as I may have to have my hip replaced.

They're doing my knee with epidural. But you're sedated so know nothing about it. Apparently it's safer. My husband had hip replacement in Edinburgh 4 weeks ago and knew nothing about the op. He is recovering well, walking 5 km daily but also resting well. Try not to worry, I have been, but they check you over really well.

Husband s hip was also epidural plus sedative. He was texting me about the clouds he could see out of ward window hours after op!

I've had facet injections into my lower spine twice. The first time there was nothing, and I won't lie, it did hurt. But was over relatively quickly. The second time, I asked for at least a little something in the IV to help with the pain and they agreed. It helped loads. I wasn't out by any means, but I was calmer and it wasn't as painful.

I had injections into my hip in March and apart from initially numbing the skin, there was no anaesthetic. It was painful but not unbearably so. Clemmie

I've had 2 steriod injections into my hip joint with local anaesthetic. Waiting to have it done again. It doesn't hurt at all. The steroid might cause a 2-3 day flare in the joint before you get the good effects, but that's something different.

I'd be incredibly surprised if they'd give anyone a general for this. As others have said, hip replacements are done under epidural block - so are amputations!

I had a hip replacement last year with a spinal anaesthetic plus sedation, rather than a GA. There is NO pain, you recover more quickly and don't feel sick - and as helix says, it's much safer. I was terrified - literally writing my Will the night before - but the moment they give you the sedative, you're fine - you don't feel scared any more. :) I'd definitely recommend it.
