Hi Everybody

Ive had a bit of a sore throat and now my voice is starting to go for the past couple of days now so called into my local chemist today and spoke to the pharmacist. She told me to see my doctor asap because I have been taking MTX for the past two years. Any info / advice to share ?

Thanks

Trish x

Hi trish1957,

Your pharmacist has given you good advice and you should try to contact your GP. Obviously it is Friday and this may not be an option. You can also try the NHS non emergency line 111 which is open 24 hours.

Regards

Beverley (NRAS Helpline)

Oddly I mentoned what I do in another post earlier this evening Trish so to save me typing it again I've c&p'd it.

If I've started what would otherwise be a simple cold to a "healthy" person I generally go to my GP or ring if I prefer not to wait along with similarly sneezy people in the waiting room & she prescribes me antibiotics if it's become or suspected to become bacterial. It has meant in the past that I've had to stop MTX until the course is finished, dependant on the antibiotic she thinks is appropriate to knock it on the head. Three weeks is usually the limit thankfully because otherwise I really start to miss it!

As Beverley has already said you probably won't be able to see your GP til the earliest Monday now so if you feel it's necessary phone 111.

I am always told to stop my mtx when I'm taking any anti-biotics.

I think, because the mtx affects your immune system, the pharmacist has given you good advice; but could have explained it better.

when you ring to request an appointment , begin by saying something like "I'm currently taking methotrexate and have now got..." (they are supposed to get you an app't!)

let us know.

I have always been seen very promptly if I start by saying that I'm on immune-suppressant drugs.

Also with a sore throat, you may need an extra blood test to check it is not associated with your blood count falling.

Please check on all the medication you are taking for side effect. Try an gaggle with warm sea salt water, this may help. Some time some food that contains salt particles in packaging, like crisps, nuts you may have to avoid for a while.
