I am on 22.5 mtx a week and I folic acid tablet. All fine. Joints good. But have a terrible mouth ulcer that I have had for three weeks and shows no sign of going away. Is this the mtx causing it. If so does anyone have any tips for me? It is so sore and dragging me down!
Mouth ulcers : I am on 22.5 mtx a week and I folic acid... - NRAS
Mouth ulcers
I'm sure that must be sore & difficult when eating. Mouth ulcers are listed as a side effect on the patient info leaflet for MTX & though i'm fortunate & haven't had them, many others on here have. You are on quite a high dose but only taking a little folic acid. I would mention it to your Rheumy or give your nurse a quick ring if you have one, you may benefit from talking folic acid more regularly. My dose is 15mg MTX & i take 5mg every day except the day I inject & much better for it, just less appetite & more tired the following day.
Hi im on 25mg and folic acid daily I get them but not as bad as I did before taking the folic acid daily, I eat natural yogurt which helps them. Hope you get them sorted micky
Hi, I'm on 20mg MTX, by injection, plus hydroxy, humira, etc..I get mouth ulcers regularly, my folic acid has been increased to 6 per week recently, which has helped a bit, but I still have to rely on difflam mouthwash, or the generic equivalent. If they get bad I use it 3 or 4 times a day. Use anbesol gel if so bad I can't eat!
They can really make you miserable can't they?
Hope you get some relief soon. M x
Thanks everyone thats really helpful I had a feeling it may be that more folic acid will help. Will ring the doc on Tuesday.
I used to get horrible mouth ulcers, so I really empathise. I increased my MTX to 6x a week and it improved hugely. It was such an easy way to manage them. Is this an option for you?
Try rinsing your mouth 3 times a day with Himalayia pink Salt it's a mineral salt and might help it heal up quicker 1 level teaspoon to a glass of warm water. Hope it works a bit .xx
When I was on MTX I had frequent large mouth ulcers. the dentist advised me to keep my mouth as clean as possible as this would reduce the pain - so I used a mouthwash and cleaned my teeth after every meal. The pharmacists suggested using various things on the ulcer - I found orabase helped the most, but sometimes the local anaesthetic gels (used for teething!) were useful too. The orabase covered the ulcer for a time which reduced the pain.
And avoid toast!
