Hey all, I have been a bit under the weather recently nothing serious but equally nothing I could put my finger on either. However, this week I have come down with a nasty cold (don’t usually get colds) which has knocked me for a six and I seem to be getting mouth ulcers. I’m on the methotrexate injection once a week and folic acid three times a week.
Can any of you lovely people recommend something for the ulcers or should I be calling the RA helpline?

Hello there! I had same issue with a spate of mouth ulcers ( sometimes around 5 at a time) whilst I was on Methotrexate ( tablets). I happened to have a hygienist appointment at the time and she checked my mouth out for me. She said she does see it with Methotrexate. She said there isn’t anything on the market that stops them but recommended “ Gengigel” ( something like that) which replicates natural healing elements that our bodies produce which “ speeds up” the healing process. Easily bought in most places, I get mine from Boots at around £6. I would say it helped. I would say if they don’t clear in a few weeks get it checked out in case there is something else going on!
Talk to your rheumy about increasing your folic acid, and try salt water gargles. They are so horrible, and drive you nuts. Hope you get over them soon.
My Folic acid was increased last week due to tiredness. I will call them tomorrow just to check x
Sorry to hear that, ouch. Had same on metoject, increased folic to 6 days and lowered dose I think. I used adult bonjela . Advice line should help you, good luck x
Hi I am not normally on this site but thought I would let you know what worked for me. I at one time tried everything in the book and nothing worked for me. Then I heard about cranberry juice 🥤. The first week you have to drink at least a carton per day then a glass everyday for quite a long time. My mouth ulcer were so bad that the covered my mouth and throat. Now I don’t drink cranberry juice 🥤 and very rare I might get one ulcer. Also it’s very good for cystitis and I never get that anymore either. Good luck I hope that you find something that kills the little blighters. Love and hugs 🤗🤗🤗🤞🤞🤞🌷🌷🌷
When I got them a lot on methotrexate (and full doses of folic acid), I used Orobase gel to cover them and make them less painful, as well as previously cleaning my teeth very carefully to remove all traces of food as advised by the dentist. The Orobase is available over the counter and sticks to moist surfaces - mainly used by people with a stoma. I also tried the various anaesthetic preparations for teething without much success. But I had such large horrendously painful ones that I eventually gave up on the methotrexate.
Yes, do call asap. I take 4 folic acid pills a day, went off methotrexate this past March yet I still sometimes get mouth sores. I now spray my toothbrush after each use with peroxide. I dab a bit of castor oil on the sores then some milk of magnesia. I also drink lots of chamomile tea with local honey. Do ask your dentist if they can suggest any remedies. Sending get well wishes! Take care and be good.
Thanks everyone. I left a message for RA nurse but no call back so will probably be Monday now before I here from them. Unfortunately I now have a really croaky voice and throat is killing me so haven’t managed out today. I’ve been gargling away with salt water and taking paracetamol to help with temp and pain relief. Hopefully I will get to chemist tomorrow and get something to help until Monday. I think I see a course antibiotics in my immediate future!
