Hi Matt not sure about apple vinegar although I know a lot of people have used it on this site , but I'm a huge fan of Manuka honey for general health so I'll be interested to see other comments. I have a hiatus hernia and when this flares up Manuka really settles it but I've just started the biologic Cimzia and apparently have to avoid live foods ie blue cheese, pro biotic yoghurt so I'm unsure if Manuka falls into this category will have to check ?! I used to take cider vinegar and honey years ago. I read about it in a book entitled "Curing Arthritis the Natural Way" or something like that. It's written by a former nurse and makes a lot of sense. I can't say that it cured me but then I didn't follow the whole thing to the letter, but I think that it might have helped a little. And she didn't recommend using expensive honey as far as I can remember. Clemmie

Hi Clemmie, Nice to hear from you would the nurses name be Faulkener or similar she was pharmacist I think, I paid £50 x 2 x 500grms Jars.Matt

Hi Matt, I just thought to look it up on Amazon and her name is Margaret Hills. She wasn't a pharmacist, definitely a nurse. It looks like she has lots of books on Amazon so well worth a look if you are interested. I really hope that the honey, vinegar thing works but if you could use a cheaper variety of honey, then it's even better! I tend to go for local honey because it's supposed to be good for hay fever which my son suffers from terribly along with many other severe allergies and find that it does help with the hay fever.

I haven't been able to get onto the site very much recently. Not sure why but it may be something to do with the authorities here - they clamp down on internet communications sometimes - but at the moment it seems ok. But reading a little, I find that I have missed an awful lot, and I'm sorry to read that so many people have left. It's a shame because they will now miss out on badly needed support. Hopefully they will come back soon. Anyway, hope you get some relief from the pain soon, Matt. Clemmie

Tried cider vinegar but didn't help. Thinking of trying pink salt as guy on Health Freaks on tv last night said it cured his (very bad) RA. I stopped taking MTX as I am quite well at mo but wary of winter! I asked about very high dosage vitamin D (50,000 i.u.) but no response at yet. Would be grateful for any advice, thanks.

Just a word of warning , they proved the guy wrong on the programme last night and said it was dangerous and could cause high blood pressure and kidney damage , xx

funkyfran profile image
funkyfran in reply toallanah

They saw fit to screen him though! It seems to present people with options so they can make up their own minds. We all know the dangers of too much sodium in our diets but he bathed in it too (don't know how he could afford that!). He seemed a genuine guy with an interesting story to tell. I've always had a tendency to believe the anecdotal rather than the 'official' line. By the way, the prog itself is awful...rather have Doctor Dawn myself!

allanah profile image
allanah in reply tofunkyfran

Absolutely Fran, but it's made me think about the ethics or morality of this type of programme.

They dangle a carrot at people like me who I feel can be vulnerable, then say, no it's not safe, but as you replied, people will still think, well it helped him!

I watched it cos it mentioned cure for RA! Well we all know that unfortunately so far there is no cure.

Of course these people are genuine but is what they say true?

Lets open the debate....

funkyfran profile image
funkyfran in reply toallanah

I'm worried about the ethics & morality of the drug companies who have a vested interest in illness....keep taking the tablets & make them even richer! I'd rather know about anything that MAY help & then weigh up pros & cons. I can't understand why alternative treatments aren't more widely available on the NHS....well, I can! Those vested interests again!

allanah profile image
allanah in reply tofunkyfran

Good point, I debated that at a conference that it's not in drug companies interest to find a drug that works straight away as at the moment we have to try so many of them !

I recently read press reports that Apple cider vinegar (must be organic apple cider vinegar, NOT supermarket cider vinegar) with manuka honey or black strap molasses is good for RA and so stocked up on it and I make a drink with it twice a day. It is the natural potassium which can supposedly help ease joint pain but it can take months to take effect. At least there is nothing damaging in it which would affect my usual meds as hate the idea of popping even more pills or taking supplements (some of which can interact with RA meds). I certainly seem to have a had a little more energy over the past couple of weeks which is a good thing. I would definitely not take any salt remedy!

Hi Annielou Thank You. Matt

allanah profile image
allanah in reply toAnnielou

Again high potassium levels can cause irregular heart beat and cardiac arrest. , lol, just saying though xx

Annielou profile image
Annielou in reply toallanah

The apple cider vinegar is supposed to help alkalize the body, and over time reduce the acids which can exacerbate the joint pain. I am ever sceptical of natural remedies but it does seem to perk me up and the ingredients do not seem harmful at all.

allanah profile image
allanah in reply toAnnielou

Of course, I did mean we just have to be careful as even natural ingredients taken wrongly can cause problems to us. I know NRAS have a great publication with what remedies are helpful for RA that have been researched.

And I like you will stay forever optimist of a proven natural cure, fingers crossed ( if I could) xx

hi Matt, irrelevant but, I use Manuka for everything! as well as everyones mentioned we use it directly on cuts, blisters, burns ect. Because if our weakened immune systems every time I get a nasty cut it starts to become infected but a dab of honey and it's sorted :) it can be used (I believe) to dress wounds because of it's 'anti-bacterial' properties.

anything red swollen, we get the Manuka out.

ps. was also amazing for morning sickness!

funkyfran profile image
funkyfran in reply towiliby

Interesting! Does it have to be Manuka? Has anyone tried 'ordinary' honey?

wiliby profile image
wiliby

and, (sorry I promise I don't work for manuka!) for chest infections, mix a tablespoon, some ginger if possible (helps inflammation) squeeze lemon with a tea bag, Works for me and taste lovely :)
