What quality Manuka Honey shall I buy?

After reading on here about the benefits of manuka honey I have decided to give it a try as I have a horrible cold. There seem to be several different types. UMF 15+, 10+ and 5+. I presume the higher the number the better the honey (and the more expensive). So my question is - What quality do you recommend I buy?

Hi there

I use 12+ active which is good for me. This honey has rather an unusual taste and took me some time to get used to it. But now I am fine with it. I got mine from a discount store but I know its expensive in the supermarkets. Any sort of honey with lemon mixed with hot water is good for a cold. Far better than medication over the counter none of which I can take as it interferes with my anti tnf med.

Good luck.

Regards Jezza

The highest potency you can get 20 if possible, it is quite expensive so watch out for special offers. I have a 14 at present.

I use 15+ that's the highest I can get up here. I find other honeys rather bland tasting now! TTx

Hi, I look out for the holland and barrat sale, every so often the have a buy one get the other for a penny, last week i'm sure it was buy one get the other half price!

to add to jezza, I add ginger (either in powder form or grate some fresh) to the lemon. honey and hot water mix, taste lovely and ginger has anti-inflammatory properties. x

I use it when I have a cold. I put a tablespoon in a cup of hot Ribena. Get mine from Aldi for £3.99 as I found it to be quite more expensive elsewhere. Its 6+ which isn't all that high but it seems to do the trick. I think anything above 5 is supposed to be good.

I buy honey from Waitrose. In my branch they have honey from the "New Zealand Honey Co. and if you google that it will give a number of returns but look down a few and you should find one that says Bioactive score which explains all about ratings. . I have had manuka honey and it has been exprensive but found N.Z. honey a lot cheaper for same amount of bio-activity..
