Hi Tiah. I take Naproxen when I flare. I was on max dose Ibuprofen for 4 months prior to diagnosis and no one told me to take a stomach protector - even after I started on Methotrexate.

I read on here that lots of people take Naproxen for RA so I asked the GP to give me some during a particularly nasty flare. Both work very well for me but like yourself I have stomach issues and was told Naproxen is safer for this.

I take Ranitidine daily but Omaprazole is even better I found (it clashed with MTX). Naproxen does make me retain fluid quite badly so I wouldn't want to take it regularly. Maybe that was in your doctor's mind. X

Hi Tiah, naproxen worked brilliantly for me but it aggravated my tummy even whilst taking Omeprasole so I had to stop taking it.

I take Celebrex now which I'm told is much kinder to the stomach and you apparently don't even need to take a ppi when taking it if your tummy is ok.

I hear Celebrex is really helpful for alot of people, for me its not as good as the naproxen but better than nothing. 4 weeks ago I had a steroid injection which is now starting to wear off, starting to see a bit of swelling in my knuckles and my joints are feeling aggravated. I started mtx this week so I hope the Celebrex keeps things at bay long enough for the mtx to start working.

I stopped the naproxen 4 weeks ago and swapped to Celebrex, carried on with the Omeprasole for 2-3 weeks to help my tummy settle but have stopped that now and so far my tummy seems ok.

I hope you find something that works for you, we are all different and there's lots of meds out there. Rosie x

its probably because of your duodenal ulcer - NSAIDs will increase the risk of the ulcer getting worse and potentially bleeding or perforating, which could be quite dangerous. Ask your doctor though if you want to know for sure why they said not to take them.

hii was taken off naproxen by consultant as been on a long time but they wer good for imflamation she said it can affect you stomach even though i take oemaprozole so istopped they have increased my omeoprozole last week to 2a day and i take tramadol for pain my rheumy nurs though says if im really need i can take anaproxen at night but not on aregular basis so i do this now i would speak to doc hun gl xxxx

Yes it can cause stomach problems so you need a stomach protector to take as well - it can also affect asthma as well. I take Pantaprozole & have been on it for years!
