I think it is supposed to be 40 or less, but one result alone may not be too worrying, it is often the trend that matters. Lots of people on here have had high results. Hope it is nothing to worry about.
My blood book says below 56 is "normal" - whatever that means since it seems that we all vary a bit in what's normal for us. In my experience the docs don't really get bothered until it's well over 100. When mine has just blipped up they merely make me have the next test a bit sooner than I would have otherwise, and so far they've just been one off blips. Why, who knows? Maybe I had one more drink than I thought I had...or perhaps didn't drink (non-alcoholic of course) enough and was a bit dehydrated? Or maybe I'd been overdoing it on the exercise front. Generally, unless the nurse phones me and tells me to worry, I don't. Polly
Well mine has been 88 and once over 100 before when I started MTX and had first dosage hike so I don't think this sounds too bad although it's undoubtedly raised. I was told by my GP that it's successive high readings that aren't good - it can just go up and come back down again slowly sometimes. I had my MTX dose lowered when this happened to me - would that be an option for you too perhaps? Tilda x

Doesn't tell you a lot, but I always understood that if only one of the liver panel was a bit out it wasn't anywhere near as relevant as if there were several that were out of normal range. From that link though, it seems that they are talking about ALT results being 4x or up to 10x the normal range for things like acute hepatitis, and as normal is 10-40, it doesn't seem that your result is that bad. If your doc hasn't said anything about it, then it will probably just be watched again on your next test. I do know that my GP said that you can get some randomly high results depending on what you had to eat last, or how hydrated you are, or how long before the blood was taken you last ate, etc. I do find its always useful to just ask my GP "how significant" a particular result is.
thanks everyone ,, if its not one thing its another ,, with my bloods ,, i will wait an see how the next one come s back .. ive got to go back for a repeat test... i`ll keep you posted .. thanks again .. andy ..
Hi andy, looking at my ranges in my mtx booklet normal range for my hospital is 0-54 so 73 doesn't seem to high, just watch the Guinness :)))))) I'm sure your repeat test will be fine.what a beautiful day.:)) lots of love Michelle xxx
Increased Diclofenac made my ALT leap up to 72 from having very good normal results. I had to up my dose to max in a bad spell of flaring in January. Once taking much less Diclofenac the ALT returned to normal a month later. I have known of a woman who drank a bottle of scotinning new year's eve and had her ALT go crazy and then come back down quite quickly. Btw this was NOT me! Despite having Glaswegian heritage I can't drink whiskey!!!
