April 5th is National Phosphorus Awareness Day!
Today is the day! AAKP invites you every April 5th (4.5) to learn about the impact of unmanaged phosphorus levels on individuals with advanced chronic kidney disease!
Through AAKP’s Center for Patient Research and Education, AAKP is educating millions of at-risk Americans and their families on the importance of managing their phosphorus intake and levels through its annual awareness campaign titled, The Hidden "P" in Kidney Disease because “P” is the abbreviation for phosphorus and is hidden in the word “kidney.”

Why are kidney patients at risk?
Kidney patients are at an increased risk for high phosphorus (hyperphosphatemia) due to their decreased kidney function and inability to excrete excess nutrients, including phosphorus. Among these patients, phosphorus can accumulate to toxic levels. Hyperphosphatemia often has no symptoms, and if undetected, can increase the risk of seizures, stroke, heart attack, and even death. Approximately 80% of patients on dialysis require phosphate-lowering therapy on top of a modified, low-phosphorus diet. Hyperphosphatemia is defined as a serum phosphorus level higher than 4.5 mg/dL. To reinforce the 4.5 mg/dL marker, AAKP marked April 5 (4.5) as the ideal target for National Phosphorus Awareness Day.
