I have been in the search for a living donor for a couple years. I am on dialysis. I just received an email from the NLDAC stating that I needed to complete an application for someone requesting funds for missed wages, travel, etc. related to kidney donation to me. My questions are:
1) How far in the evaluation process would a donor be for this letter to be sent to me?
2) Why does the application ask for my tax return and income info being I am the recipient?
I welcome your feedback : )

I would contact the NLDAC directly for this information. I certainly wouldn’t give out the information they’re asking until I know that this email is legitimate. I would either forward the email you received to them or take a screenshot and send that to them. We go through cyber security training every year at work. What you’ve described could be of concern from a cyber security perspective; it could be a scam with someone trying to access your personal financial information.
This made me cringe...... it sounds like a HUGE scam. I agree with Jayhawler about checking with NLDAC so that if it is not legit, they can follow up. Never mail personal info like tax returns unless you are sure who it is going to and you have b;acked out Social Security Numbers, birthdays and other ID type of info.
I got on the NLDAC website phone #:(888-870-5002) and what I learned is that up to 6K of funds can be provided to living donors who qualify. However Qualifying is also based on the recipient's income. There is an income scale, and if the recipient's HH income is above it the recipient is expected to provide travel funds, any missed wages, etc. This I understand and am happy to do, it's just that I received this email out of the blue without my transplant center contacting me 1st.
oh, that is weird because it says on the website that you have to go through your transplant center. Call NLDAC and let us know what you find out. I learn so much on these forums.
This screams "don't do it!" I'm sure it's a scam. Someone is masquerading under the NLDAC banner and preying on people who are desperate for a transplant. This really disturbs and angers me. As Jayhawker said, it's important to bring this to NLDAC's attention - the sooner the better to so people can continue their quest for a transplant, not looking for lost money.
There is also a reputable organization out of Denver...DONATE LIFE AMERICA. You can look them up online. You can register for a living donor transplant. There is also a list of those that are willing a kidney to a total stranger. Check them out.
The other does sound like a scam...but would reach out to the NLDAC directly. It may be a different story from them.
I went to Donate Life America website and it only seems to be to sign up to be a deceased donor. It does not seem to help people needing a living donor.
Go to their website Donate Life America. Scroll to "Organ, Eye, Tissue Donation FAQ's"
last question to "Learn about living donation..." Click on it and will get info.
When I was looking at them, I actually called them and got a lot of my questions answered. Wyoming passed the "Living Donor Protection Act" in February. For this to happen I had to find out "lots" of stats regarding living donation. I do know that the cost of medical testing, surgery & post-op care are covered either by the transplant hospital or the recipients surgery.
Also go to "American Transplant Foundation." Go to their website and scroll down to "Living donation." They also have a database. This is the organization in Denver
